# Changeset Implementation Summary
**Date**: 2025-10-09
**Status**: ✅ Complete
**Version**: 1.6.0 → Ready for changeset-based releases
## Overview
Successfully implemented automated versioning and changelog generation using Changesets for the MCP Memory TypeScript project.
## Installation
### Package Installed
```json
{
"devDependencies": {
"@changesets/cli": "^2.29.7"
}
}
```
### Initialization
- ✅ Ran `npx changeset init`
- ✅ Created `.changeset/` directory
- ✅ Generated default configuration files
## Configuration
### `.changeset/config.json`
```json
{
"$schema": "https://unpkg.com/@changesets/config@3.1.1/schema.json",
"changelog": "@changesets/cli/changelog",
"commit": false,
"fixed": [],
"linked": [],
"access": "public",
"baseBranch": "main",
"updateInternalDependencies": "patch",
"ignore": ["web"],
"___experimentalUnsafeOptions_WILL_CHANGE_IN_PATCH": {
"onlyUpdatePeerDependentsWhenOutOfRange": true
}
}
```
**Key Settings:**
- `access: "public"` - Package is published publicly to npm
- `ignore: ["web"]` - Web directory excluded from versioning
- `baseBranch: "main"` - Main branch for releases
- `commit: false` - Manual commit control (more flexibility)
## npm Scripts
### Added to `package.json`
```json
{
"scripts": {
"changeset": "changeset",
"changeset:add": "changeset add",
"changeset:version": "changeset version",
"changeset:publish": "changeset publish",
"changeset:status": "changeset status",
"version": "changeset version",
"release": "npm run pre-deploy && changeset publish"
}
}
```
### Script Purposes
| Script | Purpose |
|--------|---------|
| `changeset:add` | Interactive CLI to create new changeset |
| `changeset:version` | Update version and generate changelog |
| `changeset:publish` | Publish to npm |
| `changeset:status` | Check pending changesets |
| `release` | Full release workflow (test + publish) |
## Integration with Build Process
### Pre-Deploy Integration
The `release` script ensures quality checks before publishing:
```bash
npm run release
# Executes:
# 1. npm run build-full
# 2. npm run test:regression
# 3. changeset publish
```
### Existing Workflow Compatibility
| Existing Tool | Changeset Equivalent | Status |
|--------------|---------------------|--------|
| `scripts/manage_version.py` | `npm run changeset:add` | ✅ Coexist |
| Manual CHANGELOG.md | Automatic generation | ✅ Enhanced |
| Manual package.json | Automatic updates | ✅ Automated |
| `npm publish` | `npm run release` | ✅ Integrated |
**Note:** The Python script (`manage_version.py`) remains available for emergency hotfixes or special scenarios.

### Updated CLAUDE.md
Added changeset commands to standard operations:
```bash
# Create a changeset for your changes
npm run changeset:add
# Update version and generate changelog
npm run changeset:version
# Check changeset status
npm run changeset:status
# Release (build, test, and publish)
npm run release
```
Added to documentation index:
- [CHANGESET_GUIDE.md](./docs/guides/CHANGESET_GUIDE.md) - Version management and releases
## Usage Examples
### Example 1: Creating a Patch Release
```bash
# After fixing a bug
npm run changeset:add
# Select: patch
# Summary: "Fix null ID handling in database operations"
git add .
git commit -m "fix: null ID handling"
git push
# On main after merge
npm run changeset:version # Updates to 1.6.1
git add .
git commit -m "chore: release v1.6.1"
npm run release
git push --follow-tags
```
### Example 2: Creating a Minor Release
```bash
# After adding a feature
npm run changeset:add
# Select: minor
# Summary: "Add Google Calendar sync with week-based event tracking"
git add .
git commit -m "feat: add Google Calendar sync"
git push
# On main after merge
npm run changeset:version # Updates to 1.7.0
git add .
git commit -m "chore: release v1.7.0"
npm run release
git push --follow-tags
```
### Example 3: Multiple Changesets
```bash
# Feature A
npm run changeset:add
# Summary: "Add contact sync improvements"
# Feature B
npm run changeset:add
# Summary: "Improve error handling"
# Both will be combined when versioning
npm run changeset:status
# Shows: 2 changesets → minor bump
npm run changeset:version
# Updates to next minor version with both changes in changelog
```
## CI/CD Integration
### GitHub Actions Template
Created `.github/workflows/release.yml.example` with:
- Automated version bumps
- Changelog generation
- npm publishing
- GitHub release creation
### Manual Activation Steps
To enable automated releases:
```bash
# 1. Rename example file
mv .github/workflows/release.yml.example .github/workflows/release.yml
# 2. Add npm token to GitHub secrets
# Settings → Secrets → Actions → New repository secret
# Name: NPM_TOKEN
# Value: <your-npm-token>
# 3. Commit and push
git add .github/workflows/release.yml
git commit -m "ci: add automated release workflow"
git push
```
## Verification
### Installation Verification
```bash
# Check package installation
npm list @changesets/cli
# Output: mcp-memory-ts@1.6.0
# └── @changesets/cli@2.29.7
# Verify scripts
npm run changeset -- --help
# Shows changeset CLI help
# Check configuration
cat .changeset/config.json
# Shows proper config
```
### Functionality Test
```bash
# Test changeset creation
npm run changeset:add
# Interactive prompts work
# Check status
npm run changeset:status
# Shows pending changesets
# Test version update (dry run)
npm run changeset:version
# Updates package.json and CHANGELOG.md
```
## Migration Path
### From Manual Versioning
**Before (Manual):**
```bash
python scripts/manage_version.py bump patch
# Manually update CHANGELOG.md
npm publish
```
**After (Changesets):**
```bash
npm run changeset:add # Select patch
npm run changeset:version
npm run release
```
### Recommended Approach
1. **Use changesets by default** for all releases
2. **Keep Python script** for emergency scenarios
3. **Create changesets with PRs** (not at release time)
4. **Review generated changelog** before publishing
5. **Use GitHub Actions** for automated releases (optional)

## Troubleshooting
### Common Issues
**Issue: Changeset not creating**
```bash
# Clear npm cache and reinstall
npm cache clean --force
rm -rf node_modules package-lock.json
npm install
```
**Issue: Version not updating**
```bash
# Check for pending changesets
npm run changeset:status
# If empty, create one
npm run changeset:add
```
**Issue: Publish fails**
```bash
# Check npm authentication
npm whoami
# Login if needed
npm login
# Verify access setting
cat .changeset/config.json | grep access
# Should show: "access": "public"
```
## Success Criteria
- ✅ @changesets/cli installed and configured
- ✅ npm scripts added to package.json
- ✅ Configuration file properly set up
- ✅ Example changeset created
- ✅ Comprehensive documentation written
- ✅ Integration with existing build process
- ✅ GitHub Actions template created
- ✅ CLAUDE.md updated with changeset info
- ✅ Migration path documented
- ✅ Verification steps completed
## Conclusion
Changeset support has been successfully implemented for the MCP Memory TypeScript project. The system is:
- **Fully functional** - All scripts and configuration in place
- **Well documented** - Comprehensive guides and examples
- **Integrated** - Works with existing build and test process
