# DEBUGGING_INSTRUCTIONS
Jesse Debugging Guide:
1. Debug Mode Options:
- Enable 'Debug Mode' in backtest options
- Slower execution but detailed logging
2. Basic Debugging:
```
# Example debug logging
def update_position(self):
self.log(f'Current PNL: {self.position.pnl_percentage}')
if self.position.pnl_percentage > 2:
self.log('Liquidating position')
self.liquidate()
```
# INTERACTIVE_CHARTS_INSTRUCTIONS
Interactive charts in Jesse provide a powerful way to visualize your trading strategy's performance. They display buy/sell points and allow you to add various indicators and lines for better analysis.
### add_line_to_candle_chart
- add_line_to_candle_chart(title: str, value: float, color=None) -> None:
Adds a line to the main candlestick chart. Useful for plotting indicators that share the same scale as price.
Example:
```
def after(self) -> None:
self.add_line_to_candle_chart('EMA20', ta.ema(self.candles, 20))
```
### add_horizontal_line_to_candle_chart
- add_horizontal_line_to_candle_chart(title: str, value: float, color=None, line_width=1.5, line_style='solid') -> None:
Adds a horizontal line to the main chart. Perfect for visualizing support/resistance levels.
Example:
```
def after(self) -> None:
self.add_horizontal_line_to_candle_chart('Resistance', 50000, 'red')
self.add_horizontal_line_to_candle_chart('Support', 48000, 'green')
```
### add_extra_line_chart
- add_extra_line_chart(chart_name: str, title: str, value: float, color=None) -> None:
Creates an additional chart below the main candlestick chart. Ideal for indicators with different value ranges.
Example:
```
def after(self) -> None:
self.add_extra_line_chart('RSI', 'RSI14', ta.rsi(self.candles, 14))
```
### add_horizontal_line_to_extra_chart
- add_horizontal_line_to_extra_chart(chart_name: str, title: str, value: float, color=None) -> None:
Adds a horizontal line to an extra chart. Useful for marking levels in indicator charts.
Example:
```
def after(self) -> None:
self.add_horizontal_line_to_extra_chart('RSI', 'Overbought', 70, 'red')
self.add_horizontal_line_to_extra_chart('RSI', 'Oversold', 30, 'green')
```
Note: These methods should be called within your strategy class, typically in the `after()` method for continuous updating during backtesting.
# OPTIMIZATION_DOCUMENTATION_INSTRUCTIONS
Strategy optimization allows you to tune your strategy's parameters (hyperparameters) using genetic algorithms.
Key Points:
1. You can optimize any parameter in your strategy file
2. Examples of what can be optimized:
- Indicator periods (EMA, RSI, etc.)
- Choice between different indicators
- Entry/exit rules
For more info, watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LiAkvIpR-g
# hyperparameters
To define hyperparameters in your strategy:
1. Add hyperparameters() method to your strategy class
2. Return a list of dictionaries with these required keys:
- name: your chosen parameter name
- type: int, float, or 'categorical'
- min: minimum value (for int/float)
- max: maximum value (for int/float)
- step: increment value (optional, for int/float)
- options: list of possible values (for categorical type)
- default: default value
Example:
```
def hyperparameters(self) -> list:
return [
{'name': 'sma_period', 'type': int, 'min': 10, 'max': 200, 'default': 50},
{'name': 'stop_loss', 'type': float, 'min': 1, 'max': 5, 'step': 0.1, 'default': 2.5},
{'name': 'trend_method', 'type': 'categorical', 'options': ['supertrend', 'ema'], 'default': 'supertrend'},
]
```
3. Access parameters in your strategy using self.hp['parameter_name']
Example:
@property
def sma(self):
return ta.sma(self.candles, self.hp['sma_period'])
Notes:
- For numerical parameters, both int and float types are supported
- The 'step' parameter is optional and controls increment size during optimization
- For boolean, use int with min:0, max:1
- For categorical parameters, specify 'options' as a list of possible values
# optimize execution
Important points for running optimize mode:
1. Routes:
- Limited to ONE trading route
- Can have multiple extra routes
2. Time Period:
- Choose longer periods to prevent overfitting
- Avoid very short periods (e.g., 3 days)
3. Strategy Requirements:
- Strategy must have positive PNL
- Purpose is to improve already profitable strategy
4. Optimal Trades:
- Set number based on your timeframe
- Choose higher rather than lower numbers
- Example: For 6h timeframe with 30-60 trades/year, set to 60 or higher like 80 or 100
5. When to Stop:
- No need to wait for 100% completion
- Stop when you find a few good DNAs
- Test DNAs on validation period separately
# DNA_USAGE_DOCUMENTATION_INSTRUCTIONS
DNA Usage Guide:
1. Find your best performing DNA from the optimization results (example: 't4', 's3', etc.)
2. In your strategy file, add a 'dna' method:
```
def dna(self):
return 't4' # Replace with your DNA string
```
3. Run your strategy - it will now use the optimized values
# Indicators:
Basic Usage:
```
import jesse.indicators as ta
# Simple usage with current trading candles:
current_sma = ta.sma(self.candles, 8)
# output: 8
Simple usage with sequencal values:
current_sma = ta.sma(self.candles, 8, sequential=True)
# output: [1.2345678901234567, 1.2345678901234567, ...]
# Other that current candles:
ta.sma(self.get_candles('Binance', 'BTC-USDT', '4h'), 8)
```
3. Returned tuples values:
```
# Method 1: Tuple style
upperband, middleband, lowerband = ta.bollinger_bands(self.candles, 20)
# or
bb = ta.bollinger_bands(self.candles, 20)
bb[0] # upperband
# Method 2: Object style (named tuples)
bb = ta.bollinger_bands(self.candles, 20)
bb.upperband
```

# strategy workflow on every candle
Here's a straightforward, step-by-step explanation of the flow of a strategy when a new "candle" arrives (closes):
On every candle:
before()
if has_open_position:
update_position() # update the position including stop loss and take profit updates, or even liquidating the position
else:
if has_active_orders:
if should_cancel_entry():
# cancels remaining orders automatically
else:
if should_long():
go_long()
if should_short():
go_short()
if filters_pass():
submit_entry_orders()
after()
1. Key Events:
```
# Position Events
on_open_position() # Called after position is opened
on_close_position() # Called when position is fully closed
on_increased_position() # Called when position size increases
on_reduced_position() # Called when position size reduces
on_cancel() # Called after all orders are canceled
# Multi-Strategy Communication Events
on_route_open_position() # Position opened in another strategy
on_route_close_position() # Position closed in another strategy
on_route_increased_position() # Position increased in another strategy
on_route_reduced_position() # Position reduced in another strategy
on_route_canceled() # Orders canceled in another strategy
```
6. Important Notes:
- System automatically handles order cancellation on position closure
- Filters (if any) must pass before any entry execution
- We don't call should_long() or should_short() or should_cancel_entry() if a position is already open
- Event methods provide hooks for custom logic implementation during the lifetime of a candle (before candle close)
# Some strategy properties and methods (use them as self.property_name) available to you:
available_margin (most recommended to use)
- current available margin in your account
- Calculation: balance - margin used in open positions/orders
- Example: $10,000 balance with $2,000 in 2x leverage trades = $9,000 available
leveraged_available_margin
- Similar to available_margin but includes leverage multiplication
- Example: $10,000 balance at 2x leverage with $2,000 in trades = $18,000
balance
- Shows current wallet balance
- Equivalent to wallet balance in USDT on futures exchanges
portfolio_value
- Total value of entire portfolio in session currency (usually USDT/USD)
- Includes both open and closed positions
- Updates continuously unlike balance which updates after position close
daily_balances
- List of daily portfolio values
- Used for calculating metrics like Sharpe Ratio
average_entry_price
- Based on active orders (not open positions)
- Available after go_long() or go_short()
- Used in filter functions or when position is open
- Example:
```
def go_long(self):
qty = 2
self.buy = [
(1, 100),
(1, 120)
] # average_entry_price will be 110
```
average_stop_loss
- Average of stop-loss points if multiple exists
average_take_profit
- Average of take-profit points if multiple exists
Note: close_price is the same as current_candle[2] and is alias for price.
current_candle
- Returns numpy array: [timestamp, open, close, high, low, volume]
- Timestamp represents period start of the current candle
- Example:
```
timestamp = self.current_candle[0]
open_price = self.current_candle[1]
close_price = self.current_candle[2]
high_price = self.current_candle[3]
low_price = self.current_candle[4]
volume = self.current_candle[5]
```
candles
- Returns all candles for current trading route
- Used primarily with technical indicators
get_candles
- Fetches candles for any exchange, symbol, and timeframe
- Syntax: get_candles(exchange: str, symbol: str, timeframe: str)
- Example:
```
@property
def big_trend(self):
# Using daily candles for trend analysis
k, d = ta.srsi(self.get_candles(self.exchange, self.symbol, '1D'))
return 1 if k > d else -1 if k < d else 0
```
is_open
- Check if position is open
is_close
- Check if position is closed
is_long

index
- Counter for strategy execution iterations
- Useful for periodic actions
- Example:
```
def before(self):
if self.index % 1440 == 0: # Daily operations for 1m timeframe
# do something
```
leverage
- Returns configured leverage (1 for spot markets)
liquidate()
- Quick position closure using market order
- Example:
```
def update_position(self):
if self.index == 10:
self.liquidate() # Close position at market price
```
price

('Long EMA', self.long_ema),
('Trend', 1 if self.short_ema > self.long_ema else -1)
]
```
min_qty: Minimum tradeable quantity (live/paper trading only)
# FUTURES_VS_SPOT_INSTRUCTIONS
- Spot Trading:
* No short selling support (should_short() must return False)
* Take-profit and stop-loss must be set in on_open_position()
* Leverage is always 1
* Balance changes on order submission
* Available margin equals balance
- Futures Trading:
* Supports both long and short positions
* Take-profit and stop-loss can be set directly in go_long() but still better to set in on_open_position()
* Configurable leverage
* Balance changes only on position close or fee charges
* Available margin varies based on position
# Important Notes
- Always assume the user has Jesse fully installed unless they specifically ask about the installation.
- Jesse runs through the CLI initially, but after starting, it is used through a GUI dashboard. Do not suggest running backtests or similar tasks using the CLI. There is a research module that allows users to run backtests using a function, which is helpful for developers creating custom code while leveraging Jesse's backtesting capabilities. However, this cannot be used for live trading. MOST USERS use the GUI dashboard.
- Unless asked otherwise, always try to use the closing price of the candles as the source type of the indicators. However, that is already the default parameter.
- Unless asked otherwise, don't pass optional parameters of the indicators you use.
- In Jesse, the lookahead bias is managed behind the scenes, so you do not need to select a previous value of an indicator to avoid lookahead bias. Even if the user employs larger timeframes in their strategy, the closing price of that candle is not in the future.
- When you need to access the current stop-loss price, use `self.average_stop_loss` and not something like `self.stop_loss[1]` which doesn't make sense in Jesse.
- Unless specifically asked to, do not write filters, simply use "if conditions" inside the go_long or go_short methods.
- `self.position.qty` is only available after the position is already open so using it inside the go_long or go_short methods is not valid because the position is not open yet in that point.
- Jesse uses a smart order mechanism which means we will not specifically set the type of the order to limit, market or stop, instead if the price of the order equals the current price it will use the market order and if the price of the order is below the current price for a buy order, it will use limit, and stop if it's above the current price and vice versa for sell orders.
Example:
```py
# market order
entry_price = self.price
self.buy = qty, entry_price
# limit order
entry_price = self.price - 10
self.buy = qty, entry_price
# stop order
entry_price = self.price + 10
self.buy = qty, entry_price
```
- unless the user specifically asks for a certain period for an indicator do not set the period parameter of that indicator which would mean it will use the default number of period for that indicator.
- don't write code like this:
```py
def go_long(self):
entry_price = self.kama # Set entry at the KAMA line
qty = utils.size_to_qty(self.balance * 0.5, entry_price) # Use half of balance
stop_loss = entry_price - (self.atr * 2) # Set stop loss
self.buy = qty, entry_price # Place limit order
```
Where the `stop_loss` is defined as a variable without any use. If you're going to set it stop-loss later in the on_open_position method and also if you're not using its value inside the go_long method either, for example for setting the size of the position, then don't define it at all.
- Inside on_open_position(), remember to check for the type of the position first to make sure if it's a long or a short position before setting things such as stop-loss or take-profit.
## To avoid:
- Don't use `self.stop_loss[1]`, it makes no sense. Use `self.average_stop_loss` instead.
```py
# wrong:
def update_position(self):
if self.is_long:
# Only update trailing stop-loss if the price has moved at least 1 ATR in profit
if self.price >= self.position.entry_price + self.atr:
self.stop_loss = self.position.qty, max(self.stop_loss[1], self.kama)
# correct:
def update_position(self):
if self.is_long:
# Only update trailing stop-loss if the price has moved at least 1 ATR in profit
if self.price >= self.position.entry_price + self.atr:
self.stop_loss = self.position.qty, max(self.average_stop_loss, self.kama)
## Example for risking 3% of capital per trade:
```py
def go_long(self):
entry = self.price - ta.atr(self.candles)
stop = entry - ta.atr(self.candles) * 2.5
qty = utils.risk_to_qty(self.available_margin, 3, entry, stop, fee_rate=self.fee_rate)
self.buy = qty, entry
```
## example for implementing a trailing stop:
```py
def update_position(self) -> None:
if self.is_long:
self.stop_loss = self.position.qty, min(self.average_stop_loss, self.ema)
elif self.is_short:
self.stop_loss = self.position.qty, max(self.average_stop_loss, self.ema)
```
**So, don't do things like `self.trailing_stop = True` because it's not a valid way to implement a trailing stop in Jesse.** There is no `self.trailing_stop` attribute in Jesse.
## Example for preparing the strategy for optimization:

=== Example Strategy #8:
For a pairs trading strategy, we need to define at least two routes. The first one will lead the decisions by checking all the calculations and values, and also setting the decisions inside the self.shared_var's value so that we can communicate with the other routes. The other routes simply use one very simple strategy code that only tells them whether to go long, short, or neutral.
Leading route:
