# Code Quality Improvements
This document describes the improvements made to enhance code quality, maintainability, and operational visibility.
## Summary of Changes
### 1. **Extracted Common Formatting Logic**
### 2. **Added Comprehensive Logging**
### 3. **Added Health Checks and Startup Diagnostics**
---
## 1. Extracted Common Formatting Logic
### Problem
Formatting logic was duplicated across multiple service classes:
- `WindowActivityService.formatConcise()`
- `WebActivityService.formatConcise()`
- `DailySummaryService.formatConcise()`
This violated the DRY (Don't Repeat Yourself) principle and made maintenance harder.
### Solution
Created `src/utils/formatters.ts` with centralized formatting functions:
```typescript
export function formatWindowActivityConcise(data): string
export function formatWebActivityConcise(data): string
export function formatDailySummaryConcise(summary): string
export function formatRawEventsConcise(bucketId, events, limit): string
```
### Benefits
- ✅ Single source of truth for formatting logic
- ✅ Easier to maintain and update formatting
- ✅ Consistent output across all tools
- ✅ Reduced code duplication (~60 lines removed)
- ✅ Services now focus on business logic, not presentation
### Files Changed
- Created: `src/utils/formatters.ts`
- Updated: `src/services/window-activity.ts`
- Updated: `src/services/web-activity.ts`
- Updated: `src/services/daily-summary.ts`
- Updated: `src/index.ts`

## 2. Added Comprehensive Logging
### Problem
Logging was minimal:
- Only startup message and fatal errors
- No visibility into tool calls or data flow
- Difficult to debug issues
- No performance insights
### Solution
Created `src/utils/logger.ts` with structured logging:
#### Logger Features
- **Log Levels**: DEBUG, INFO, WARN, ERROR
- **Environment Control**: Set via `LOG_LEVEL` env variable
- **Structured Data**: JSON formatting for complex objects
- **Stderr Output**: Doesn't interfere with MCP stdio communication
- **Singleton Pattern**: Consistent logging across all modules
#### Logging Added Throughout
**Client Layer** (`src/client/activitywatch.ts`):
```typescript
logger.debug(`API request: ${method} ${path}`)
logger.debug(`API response: ${method} ${path} - ${response.status}`)
logger.error(`API error: ${method} ${path}`, { status, statusText, body })
logger.error(`Connection error: ${method} ${path}`, error)
```
**Service Layer** (all services):
```typescript
logger.debug('Getting window activity', { params })
logger.debug('Time range calculated', { start, end })
logger.info(`Found ${windowBuckets.length} window tracking buckets`)
logger.warn('No window tracking buckets available')
logger.debug(`Fetching events from bucket: ${bucket.id}`)
logger.debug(`Retrieved ${events.length} events from ${bucket.id}`)
logger.info(`Total events collected: ${allEvents.length}`)
logger.error(`Failed to get events from bucket ${bucket.id}`, error)
```
**Tool Handler** (`src/index.ts`):
```typescript
logger.info(`Tool called: ${name}`, { args })
logger.debug('Fetching capabilities')
logger.info('Capabilities retrieved', { bucketCount, capabilities })
logger.info('Window activity retrieved', { totalTime, appCount })
logger.error(`Tool error: ${name}`, error)
```
### Usage
**Default (INFO level)**:
```bash
node dist/index.js
```
**Debug mode**:
```bash
LOG_LEVEL=DEBUG node dist/index.js
```
**Quiet mode (errors only)**:
```bash
LOG_LEVEL=ERROR node dist/index.js
```
### Benefits
- ✅ Full visibility into tool execution
- ✅ Performance monitoring (event counts, bucket counts)
- ✅ Error tracking with context
- ✅ Debugging capabilities
- ✅ Audit trail of all operations
- ✅ Configurable verbosity
### Example Log Output
```
## 3. Added Health Checks and Startup Diagnostics
### Problem
- No validation that ActivityWatch is running before accepting requests
- No visibility into what data sources are available at startup
- Errors only discovered when tools are called
- No startup diagnostics for troubleshooting
### Solution
Created `src/utils/health.ts` with comprehensive health checking:
#### Health Check Features
**Startup Health Check**:
- Verifies ActivityWatch server is reachable
- Checks server version
- Counts available buckets
- Detects tracking capabilities (window/browser/AFK)
- Provides warnings for missing features
- Logs detailed diagnostics
**Health Check Result**:
```typescript
interface HealthCheckResult {
healthy: boolean;
serverReachable: boolean;
serverVersion?: string;
bucketsAvailable: number;
hasWindowTracking: boolean;
hasBrowserTracking: boolean;
hasAfkTracking: boolean;
errors: string[];
warnings: string[];
}
```
**Startup Diagnostics**:
```typescript
logStartupDiagnostics(awUrl: string)
```
Logs:
- ActivityWatch URL
- Node.js version
- Platform (OS)
- Log level configuration
#### Integration
Health check runs automatically on server startup:
```typescript
async function main() {
// Perform health check on startup
logger.info('Performing startup health check...');
const healthCheck = await performHealthCheck(client);
if (!healthCheck.healthy) {
logger.warn('Health check failed, but server will start anyway', {
errors: healthCheck.errors,
warnings: healthCheck.warnings,
});
} else {
logger.info('Health check passed');
}
// Continue with server startup...
}
```
### Benefits
- ✅ Early detection of configuration issues
- ✅ Clear warnings about missing features
- ✅ Helpful error messages with suggestions
- ✅ Startup diagnostics for troubleshooting
- ✅ Server starts even if health check fails (graceful degradation)
- ✅ Detailed logging of available capabilities
### Example Health Check Output
**Healthy System**:
```
[INFO] Performing startup health check...
[INFO] ActivityWatch server reachable {"version":"0.12.0"}
[INFO] Found 3 buckets
[INFO] Health check complete {"healthy":true,"bucketsAvailable":3,"hasWindowTracking":true,"hasBrowserTracking":true,"hasAfkTracking":true,"errorCount":0,"warningCount":0}
[INFO] Health check passed
```
**System with Warnings**:
```
[INFO] Performing startup health check...
[INFO] ActivityWatch server reachable {"version":"0.12.0"}
[WARN] No buckets available
[WARN] Window tracking not available
[WARN] Browser tracking not available
[WARN] AFK tracking not available
[INFO] Health check complete {"healthy":true,"bucketsAvailable":0,"hasWindowTracking":false,"hasBrowserTracking":false,"hasAfkTracking":false,"errorCount":0,"warningCount":4}
[WARN] Health check failed, but server will start anyway {"errors":[],"warnings":["No data buckets found...","Window tracking not available...","Browser tracking not available...","AFK tracking not available..."]}
```
**Unreachable Server**:
```
[INFO] Performing startup health check...
[ERROR] ActivityWatch server unreachable Error: fetch failed...
[INFO] Health check complete {"healthy":false,"bucketsAvailable":0,"hasWindowTracking":false,"hasBrowserTracking":false,"hasAfkTracking":false,"errorCount":1,"warningCount":0}
[WARN] Health check failed, but server will start anyway {"errors":["Cannot connect to ActivityWatch server. Is it running?"],"warnings":[]}
```
