# MCP Proxy Refactoring Summary
## ✅ Completed Refactoring
### File Structure (Before → After)
- **Before**: Single 2,576-line file
- **After**: Modular structure with 6 files totaling ~2,334 lines
### New Structure:
```
src/
├── mcp-proxy.ts # Main class (486 lines)
├── tools/
│ └── static-tools.ts # Tool definitions (428 lines)
├── schemas/
│ └── index.ts # Validation schemas (112 lines)
├── handlers/
│ ├── static-handlers.ts # Static handlers (922 lines)
│ └── dynamic-handlers.ts # Dynamic handlers (159 lines)
└── utils/
└── prompts.ts # Prompt utilities (227 lines)
```
## 🔍 Static Tools Behavior Without API Key
### Tools Always Visible
All 11 static tools are exposed in the tool list even without an API key:
1. `pluggedin_discover_tools`
2. `pluggedin_rag_query`
3. `pluggedin_send_notification`
4. `pluggedin_list_notifications`
5. `pluggedin_mark_notification_read`
6. `pluggedin_delete_notification`
7. `pluggedin_create_document`
8. `pluggedin_list_documents`
9. `pluggedin_search_documents`
10. `pluggedin_get_document`
11. `pluggedin_update_document`
### Functionality Without API Key
- **✅ Can List**: All tools appear in the list
- **⚠️ Limited Use**: Only `pluggedin_discover_tools` partially works (returns empty server list)
- **❌ Others Fail**: All other tools return error: "Pluggedin API Key or Base URL is not configured"
### User Experience
1. Users can see what tools are available
2. They understand they need an API key to use most features
3. The discover tool shows them how to connect but won't show actual servers
## 🧹 Code Cleanup Needed
### 1. Remove Unused Imports in `mcp-proxy.ts`
```typescript
// Remove these unused imports:
- import { z } from "zod";
- import { getMcpServers } from "./fetch-pluggedinmcp.js";
- import { getSessionKey, getSession } from "./sessions.js";
- import { ConnectedClient } from "./client.js";
- import { ServerParameters } from "./types.js";
- import { logMcpActivity, createExecutionTimer } from "./notification-logger.js";
- import { withTimeout } from "./security-utils.js";
- import { PromptMessage, GetPromptResultSchema } from "@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/types.js";
```
### 2. Fix Import Paths
```typescript
// In handlers/dynamic-handlers.ts and handlers/static-handlers.ts:
- import { getSessionKey } from "../sessions.js";
+ import { getSessionKey } from "../utils.js";
```
### 3. Fix TypeScript Type Usage
```typescript
// Remove 'satisfies' and use proper type assertions
- } satisfies ListToolsResultSchema;
+ } as ListToolsResultSchema;
```
### 4. Fix Method Calls
```typescript
// In mcp-proxy.ts line 457:
- await this.server.run();
+ await transport.start();
```
## 📋 Recommendations
### 1. Add API Key Instructions
Consider updating tool descriptions to indicate API key requirement:
```typescript
description: "Create and save AI-generated documents (requires API key)"
```
### 2. Create Setup Tool
Add a `pluggedin_setup` tool that works without API key and provides:
- Instructions on getting an API key
- How to configure the environment
- Links to documentation
### 3. Graceful Degradation
Instead of throwing errors, provide helpful messages:
```typescript
if (!apiKey) {
return {
content: [{
type: "text",
text: "This tool requires a Plugged.in API key. Visit https://plugged.in/settings to get one."
}],
isError: false
};
}
```
## 🚀 Next Steps
1. Apply the code cleanup changes
2. Fix TypeScript compilation errors
3. Add better error messages for non-API key users
4. Consider adding a setup/help tool
5. Update documentation to reflect the new structure
