# ADR 004: Ruvector Integration Analysis
## Status
Analyzed
## Context
The `ruvector/` directory exists in the workspace root, containing a substantial Rust-based vector database and AI orchestration system. The user requested an analysis of this directory and any integration points within the `src/` directory (the TypeScript MCP server).
## Analysis
### Ruvector Architecture
Based on `ruvector/README.md` and `ruvector/Cargo.toml`, Ruvector is a high-performance vector database and AI platform written in Rust.
**Key Components:**
1. **Core Vector Database**: HNSW indexing, SIMD acceleration, and adaptive compression [Source: `ruvector/README.md:34-41`].
2. **Distributed Systems**: Raft consensus, multi-master replication, and auto-sharding [Source: `ruvector/README.md:43-50`].
3. **AI & ML**: Local LLM runtime (`ruvllm`), SONA (Self-Optimizing Neural Architecture), and GNN layers [Source: `ruvector/README.md:51-61`].
4. **Specialized Crates**:
- `crates/ruvector-core`: Core engine.
- `crates/ruvector-gnn`: Graph Neural Network layers.
- `crates/sona`: Self-learning architecture.
- `crates/rvlite`: Standalone edge database.
### Integration with `src/`
A comprehensive search of the `src/` directory reveals **no direct code integration** with `ruvector` at this time.
**Evidence:**
1. **Dependency Check**: `package.json` does not list `ruvector`, `sona`, or any related packages in `dependencies` or `devDependencies` [Source: `package.json:75-109`] [Status: VERIFIED].
2. **Code Search**: A regex search for `(ruvector|sona)` in `src/` yielded no relevant imports or usage [Status: VERIFIED].
3. **Knowledge Implementation**: The current knowledge graph implementation in `src/knowledge` uses `better-sqlite3` and JSONL, not Ruvector [Source: `src/knowledge/storage.ts:15`] [Status: VERIFIED].
### Intended Architecture (Hypothesis)
While not currently integrated, the presence of `ruvector` suggests a future integration path. Ruvector's documentation mentions an "MCP integration" feature:
> "MCP integration | Model Context Protocol server for AI assistant tools" [Source: `ruvector/README.md:76`]
It is likely that `ruvector` is intended to serve as:
1. **Backend Service**: A high-performance backend for vector search and memory, replacing or augmenting the current SQLite solution.
2. **Sidecar MCP Server**: A separate MCP server that the Thoughtbox server might communicate with or delegate to.
## Decision
For the current version of Thoughtbox (`src/`), Ruvector is an **external component** with no direct code dependencies. Future architectural decisions should address how to bridge the TypeScript MCP server with the Rust-based Ruvector system (e.g., via HTTP, FFI, or WASM).
## Consequences
- **Current State**: The `src/` codebase is self-contained and does not rely on `ruvector`.
- **Future Work**: Integration will require adding bindings (e.g., `ruvector-node`) or establishing a communication protocol between the TypeScript server and the Ruvector service.
