- ✅ Created utility functions module for common operations
- ✅ Implemented comprehensive logging throughout
- ✅ Added retry logic with exponential backoff for API calls
- ✅ Enhanced input validation (VIN format checking)
- ✅ Improved error messages with actionable context
- ✅ Created developer documentation (DEVELOPMENT.md)
- ✅ Added docstring examples for all public methods
---
## Key Improvements
### 1. Custom Exception Hierarchy
**New File**: `src/exceptions.py`
We created a comprehensive exception hierarchy to replace generic `Exception` and `ValueError` usage:
```python
TessieMCPError (base)
├── VehicleNotFoundError # Vehicle with VIN not found
├── TessieAPIError # API request failures
├── AuthenticationError # Token/auth problems
├── ConfigurationError # Missing/invalid config
├── VehicleCommandError # Command execution failures
└── DataValidationError # Invalid/unexpected data
```
**Benefits:**
- Precise error catching: `except VehicleNotFoundError` vs `except Exception`
- Better error messages with context
- Easier debugging with specific exception types
- Catch all app errors with `except TessieMCPError`
**Example Usage:**
```python
try:
vehicle = client.get_vehicle_by_vin(vin)
except VehicleNotFoundError as e:
# Handle specific case of vehicle not found
logger.error("Vehicle not found: %s", e.vin)
except TessieAPIError as e:
# Handle general API errors
logger.error("API error: %s (status: %d)", e, e.status_code)
```
### 2. Constants Module
**New File**: `src/constants.py`
All magic numbers and configuration values centralized:
```python
# Before (scattered throughout code)
timeout = 30 # What's this timeout for?
if level == 0: # What does 0 mean?
# After (self-documenting)
timeout = DEFAULT_API_TIMEOUT # Clear meaning
if level == HEATER_OFF: # Semantic meaning
```
**Categories:**
- API configuration (URLs, timeouts, retries)
- HTTP status codes
- Heater/shift state mappings
- Environment variable names
- Endpoint templates
- Validation thresholds
**Benefits:**
- Single source of truth for configuration
- Easy to adjust behavior (change `MAX_API_RETRIES` in one place)
- Self-documenting code
- Prevents typos in string literals
### 3. Utility Functions Module
**New File**: `src/utils.py`
Common operations extracted into reusable functions:
| Function | Purpose |
|----------|---------|
| `setup_logging()` | Configure consistent logging across modules |
| `format_timestamp()` | Convert Unix timestamps to readable dates |
| `validate_vin()` | Check VIN format (17 alphanumeric chars) |
| `sanitize_vin_for_logging()` | Mask VIN for privacy in logs |
| `format_duration()` | Convert minutes to "2h 5m" format |
| `get_compass_direction()` | Convert degrees to compass directions |
| `safe_get()` | Safely navigate nested dictionaries |
**Benefits:**
- Eliminate code duplication
- Consistent formatting across the app
- Easier testing (test utilities once)
- Privacy protection (sanitized VINs in logs)
### 4. Comprehensive Logging
Added structured logging throughout the application:
**Log Levels:**
- `DEBUG`: API calls, retries, cache hits, data parsing
- `INFO`: Service initialization, vehicle found, successful commands
- `WARNING`: Rate limits, stale data, invalid formats
- `ERROR`: API failures, command failures, missing config
- `CRITICAL`: Server crashes, unrecoverable errors
**Example Log Output:**
```
2025-11-29 10:15:30 - src.tessie_client - INFO - TessieClient initialized with base_url=https://api.tessie.com
2025-11-29 10:15:31 - src.server - INFO - Initializing services for VIN ending in ...3456
2025-11-29 10:15:32 - src.tessie_client - INFO - Fetching battery data for VIN 5YJ3E****3456
2025-11-29 10:15:33 - src.tessie_client - DEBUG - Making GET request to https://... (attempt 1/4)
2025-11-29 10:15:34 - src.tessie_client - DEBUG - Response status: 200
2025-11-29 10:15:34 - src.tessie_client - DEBUG - Request successful, received 1234 bytes
```
**Privacy Protection:**
- VINs are sanitized: `5YJ3E1EA1KF123456` → `5YJ3E****3456`
- Tokens never logged
- Sensitive data redacted
### 5. Retry Logic with Exponential Backoff
**Enhanced**: `src/tessie_client.py`
All API calls now automatically retry on transient failures:
```python
# Configuration (in constants.py)
MAX_API_RETRIES = 3
RETRY_BACKOFF_FACTOR = 2
# Behavior:
# Attempt 1: Immediate
# Attempt 2: Wait 2^0 = 1 second
# Attempt 3: Wait 2^1 = 2 seconds
# Attempt 4: Wait 2^2 = 4 seconds
# Give up: Raise TessieAPIError
```
**Handles:**
- Rate limiting (HTTP 429) with automatic retry
- Timeouts with exponential backoff
- Temporary network failures
- Server errors (with retry)
**Benefits:**
- Resilient to transient failures
- Automatic recovery from rate limits
- Better user experience (no manual retries)
- Logged retry attempts for debugging
### 6. Input Validation
**Added**: VIN validation, interval validation, configuration checks
```python
# VIN Validation
def validate_vin(vin: str) -> bool:
"""Validate VIN is 17 alphanumeric characters."""
return isinstance(vin, str) and len(vin) == 17 and vin.isalnum()
# Usage
if not validate_vin(user_vin):
logger.warning("VIN appears to have invalid format")
# Continue but warn
```
**Configuration Validation:**
```python
# Telemetry interval must be positive or 'realtime'
if interval <= 0:
raise ConfigurationError("Interval must be positive")
```
**Benefits:**
- Catch errors early
- Clear error messages
- Prevent invalid API calls
- Better user experience
### 7. Enhanced Error Messages
**Before:**
```
Error: Vehicle not found
```
**After:**
```
Vehicle with VIN '5YJ3E1EA1KF123456' not found. Please verify the VIN is correct.
Possible causes:
- VIN typo in .env file
- Vehicle not linked to your Tessie account
- Token doesn't have access to this vehicle
```
**Benefits:**
- Actionable guidance for users
- Faster problem resolution
- Less support burden
- Better developer experience
### 8. Developer Documentation
**New File**: `DEVELOPMENT.md`
Comprehensive 800+ line developer guide covering:
- Architecture overview with diagrams
- Code organization and design patterns
- Development setup instructions
- Debugging techniques for common scenarios
- Testing procedures
- How to add new features (step-by-step)
- Error handling best practices
- Logging guidelines
- Code style and contribution workflow
**Benefits:**
- Faster onboarding for new contributors
- Consistent development practices
- Self-service debugging
- Reduced maintainer burden

## Breaking Changes
### ⚠️ None!
This refactoring was designed to be **100% backward compatible**.
- All existing MCP tools work identically
- No API signature changes
- Configuration format unchanged
- Client code unaffected
**Internal changes only:**
- New modules added
- Error handling improved
- Logging added
- But all public interfaces remain the same
---
## Migration Guide
### For Users
**No action required!** The refactoring is transparent to end users.
Your existing configuration will continue to work:
```bash
# .env file - no changes needed
TESSIE_TOKEN=your_token
VEHICLE_VIN=your_vin
TELEMETRY_INTERVAL=5
```
### For Developers/Contributors
If you're extending the codebase:
**1. Use the new exception types:**
```python
# Old
raise ValueError(f"Vehicle {vin} not found")
# New
raise VehicleNotFoundError(vin)
```
**2. Use constants instead of magic numbers:**
```python
# Old
if status_code == 429:
# New
from src.constants import HTTP_RATE_LIMITED
if status_code == HTTP_RATE_LIMITED:
```
**3. Add logging to new code:**
```python
from src.utils import setup_logging
class MyNewService:
def __init__(self):
self.logger = setup_logging(__name__)
def my_method(self):
self.logger.info("Doing something")
self.logger.debug("Detailed info: %s", data)
```
**4. Use utility functions:**
```python
# Old
vin_log = f"{vin[:5]}****{vin[-4:]}"
# New
from src.utils import sanitize_vin_for_logging
vin_log = sanitize_vin_for_logging(vin)
```
---
## Testing the Enhancements
### 1. Test Logging
```bash
# Enable debug logging
python -m src.server 2>&1 | grep DEBUG
# Should see detailed logs:
# DEBUG - Making GET request to https://...
# DEBUG - Response status: 200
# DEBUG - Request successful, received 1234 bytes
```
### 2. Test Exception Handling
```bash
# Test missing VIN
unset VEHICLE_VIN
python -m src.server
# Should see:
# ❌ Configuration Error: VEHICLE_VIN environment variable or config.VIN required.
# Please set VEHICLE_VIN in your .env file.
```
### 3. Test Retry Logic
```python
# Simulate rate limit (requires API access)
from src.tessie_client import TessieClient
client = TessieClient()
# Make rapid requests to trigger rate limit
for i in range(20):
try:
client.get_battery(vin)
except Exception as e:
print(f"Request {i}: {e}")
# Should see automatic retries:
# WARNING - Rate limited. Waiting 1s before retry...
# WARNING - Rate limited. Waiting 2s before retry...
# WARNING - Rate limited. Waiting 4s before retry...
```
### 4. Test VIN Validation
```python
from src.utils import validate_vin
# Valid
assert validate_vin("5YJ3E1EA1KF123456") == True
# Invalid (too short)
assert validate_vin("SHORT") == False
# Invalid (not alphanumeric)
assert validate_vin("5YJ3E1EA1KF12345!") == False
```
### 5. Test Error Messages
```bash
# Test with invalid VIN
VEHICLE_VIN=INVALID python -m src.server
# Should see warning:
# WARNING - VIN 'INVALID' appears to have invalid format (expected 17 characters)
# Test with wrong VIN
VEHICLE_VIN=AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA python -m src.server
# Then call a telemetry tool
# Should see:
# Vehicle with VIN 'AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA' not found. Please verify the VIN is correct.
```
