Your goal is to create a markdown file with a comprehensive list of checkbox tasks for a given specification. You will identify the target spec, carefully analyze its functional and technical documents, and generate a task list where each main task represents a small, end-to-end, runnable increment of the feature. The final list will be saved to `tasks.md` within the spec's directory.

# PROCESS
Follow this process precisely.
## Step 1: Identify the Target Specification
1. **Analyze User Prompt:** Analyze the `<user_prompt>`. If it clearly references a spec by name or index, identify the corresponding directory in `context/spec/`.
2. **Ask for Clarification:** If the `<user_prompt>` is **empty or ambiguous**, you MUST ask the user to choose.
- List the available spec directories that contain both a `functional-spec.md` and `technical-considerations.md`.
- Example: "Which specification would you like to break down into tasks? Here are the available ones:\n- `001-user-profile-picture-upload`\n- `002-password-reset`\nPlease select one."
- Do not proceed until the user has selected a valid spec.
## Step 2: Gather and Synthesize Context
1. **Confirm Target:** Once the spec is identified, announce your task: "Okay, I will now create a runnable task list for **'[Spec Name]'**."
2. **Read Documents:** Carefully read and synthesize both the `functional-spec.md` and `technical-considerations.md` from the chosen directory. You need to understand both the "what" and the "how."
## Step 3: Plan and Draft the Task List
- You will now generate the task list. You must adhere to the following critical rule.
- **CRITICAL RULE: Create Runnable Tasks using Vertical Slicing**
- A **runnable task** means that after the work is done, the application can be started and used without errors, and a small piece of new functionality is visible or testable.
- To achieve this, you must **avoid horizontal, layer-based tasks** (e.g., "Do all database work," then "Do all API work").
- Instead, you must **create vertical slices**. A vertical slice is the smallest possible piece of end-to-end functionality.
- **Your Thought Process for Generating Tasks:**
1. First, identify the absolute smallest piece of user-visible value from the spec. This is your **Slice 1**.
2. Create a high-level checklist item for that slice (e.g., `- [ ] **Slice 1: View existing avatar (or placeholder)**`).
3. Under that slice, create the nested sub-tasks (database, backend, frontend) needed to implement **only that slice**.
4. Next, identify the second-smallest piece of value that builds on the first. This is **Slice 2**.
5. Create a high-level checklist item and its sub-tasks.
6. Repeat this process until all requirements from the specification are covered.
- **Example of applying the rule for "User Profile Picture Upload":**
- **Bad, Horizontal Tasks (DO NOT DO THIS):**
- `[ ] Add avatar_url to users table`
- `[ ] Create all avatar API endpoints (upload, delete)`
- `[ ] Build the entire profile picture UI`
- **Good, Vertical Slices (DO THIS):**
- `[ ] **Slice 1: Display a placeholder avatar on the profile page**`
- `[ ] Sub-task: Add a non-functional 'ProfileAvatar' UI component that shows a static placeholder image.`
- `[ ] Sub-task: Place the component on the profile page.`
- `[ ] **Slice 2: Display the user's actual avatar if it exists**`
- `[ ] Sub-task: Add `avatar_url`column to the`users` table via a migration.`
- `[ ] Sub-task: Update the user API endpoint to return the `avatar_url`.`
- `[ ] Sub-task: Update the 'ProfileAvatar' component to fetch and display the user's `avatar_url`, falling back to the placeholder if null.`
## Step 4: Present Draft and Refine
- Present the complete, vertically sliced task list to the user.
- Ask for feedback: "Here is a proposed task list, broken down into runnable, incremental slices. Does this sequence and level of detail look correct? We can adjust, split, or merge tasks as needed."
- Allow the user to request changes until they are satisfied.
## Step 5: File Generation
1. **Identify Path:** The output path is the `tasks.md` file inside the directory you identified in Step 1.
2. **Save File:** Once the user approves the draft, write the final task list into this file.
3. **Conclude:** Announce the completion and the file's location: "The task list has been created. You can find it at `context/spec/[directory-name]/tasks.md`. Let’s get to work! Execute the next task with `/awos:implement` when you're ready."
