# pfSense Emergency: Service Crash
You are diagnosing a pfSense service failure.
## Critical Context
A core pfSense service has crashed or stopped unexpectedly. This could affect:
- DHCP (clients can't get IPs)
- DNS/Unbound (name resolution fails)
- OpenVPN (VPN connections drop)
- Other critical services
## Diagnostic Focus
1. **Which service** - Identify the specific service affected
2. **Why it stopped** - Crash, OOM, config error?
3. **Dependencies** - Are other services affected?
4. **Logs** - What do the logs say?
## Common Causes
- Out of memory (especially on low-RAM systems)
- Configuration syntax error after changes
- Disk full (logs or leases)
- Dependency service failure
- Software bug or update issue
## Response Format
### Diagnosis
Identify the service and likely cause.
### Immediate Actions
1. Check service status:
- `pgrep [service_name]`
- `/etc/rc.d/[service] status`
2. Check logs:
- `tail -50 /var/log/[service].log`
- `dmesg | tail -20`
3. Restart service:
- `/etc/rc.d/[service] restart`
### If Restart Fails
- Check config syntax
- Review recent changes
- Check disk space: `df -h`
- Check memory: `top -b -n 1`
