Ableton MCP
# Ableton MCP
MCP server for **full Ableton Live control** — wraps **AbletonOSC** + **ClyphX Pro** into 143 tools controllable from Claude, Cursor, or any MCP client.
## Prerequisites
- **Ableton Live** with [AbletonOSC](https://github.com/ideoforms/AbletonOSC) control surface (port 11000)
- **ClyphX Pro** control surface (port 7005) — for device loading and track creation
- **Python 3.10+** and [uv](https://astral.sh/uv)
## Setup
### Claude Desktop
Add to `claude_desktop_config.json`:
```json
{
"mcpServers": {
"ableton": {
"command": "uv",
"args": ["--directory", "/path/to/ableton-mcp", "run", "ableton-mcp"]
}
}
}
```
### Cursor
Go to **Settings > MCP** and add:
```
uv --directory "/path/to/ableton-mcp" run ableton-mcp
```

Scored across 143 tools
There is substantial overlap between direct OSC tools and ClyphX-based tools for the same functions (e.g., create track, set tempo, fire clip). Many tools have ambiguous boundaries, making it hard for an agent to select the correct one.
Most tools follow a snake_case verb_noun pattern, but there are exceptions like 'undo', 'redo', and compound names like 'capture_and_insert_scene'. The clyphx_* prefix creates a consistent sub-namespace, but the overall naming is mixed.
At 143 tools, the server is far too large for typical MCP use. Many tools are redundant (e.g., multiple ways to create tracks) or overly granular, making the surface unwieldy and difficult to navigate.
The tool set covers virtually every aspect of Ableton Live: transport control, tracks, clips, devices, routing, scene management, MIDI editing, automation, and advanced ClyphX integration. No obvious gaps for core DAW operations.
