Server Configuration

Describes the environment variables required to run the server.

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
ENVELOPE_HOMENoDirectory used for Envelope's local state (database and credentials). Point this at persistent encrypted storage on a server deployment.
ENVELOPE_MASTER_KEYNoMaster key used to encrypt/decrypt saved credentials on a headless Linux host (alternative to ENVELOPE_MASTER_PASSPHRASE_FILE).
ENVELOPE_AGENT_TOKENNoAgent token used by the MCP server so sessions can be bound to an agent with scoped policy. In the Docker container, pass ENVELOPE_AGENT_TOKEN for an agent created in the mounted data directory; without a token the container only starts when it has no database yet (throwaway agent).
ENVELOPE_MASTER_PASSPHRASE_FILENoPath to a file containing the passphrase used to encrypt/decrypt saved account credentials. Required for non-interactive use (scripts, agents, piped input), since the MCP server has no terminal to prompt for a passphrase.
