Satchel

Your records, readable by any AI agent. Carried by you.

Satchel is an open-source vault for personal records (IDs, vehicle papers, insurance, prescriptions, leases). Files stay in your own folders: a local folder, a NAS share, or a cloud-synced folder. Any MCP-capable agent (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude Code, local models) can search them, file new ones and remind you before anything expires. Switch agents whenever you like; nothing is locked in.

Develop

Requires Node.js 24+ (TypeScript runs natively, no build step for the server packages) and pnpm.

pnpm install
pnpm test # unit + end-to-end (agent → relay → node, OAuth, approvals)
node scripts/demo-seed.ts # demo vault in .satchel-dev (password: demo)
node packages/node/src/cli.ts serve --data .satchel-dev/data # http://127.0.0.1:7710
pnpm dev:web # http://localhost:5180 (demo mode without Supabase env)
pnpm --filter @satchel/desktop start

Local-first, file-based memory layer for AI agents — one shared Markdown vault across Claude, Codex, Gemini, Cursor and any MCP client. Provides read/write memory tools with an audit trail, per-agent trust levels, and Git sync; no cloud and no lock-in.

Enables an AI agent over MCP to read, file, and correct a plain-file, self-hosted personal life store — memories, people, money, body, papers, decisions and someday, alongside the usual tasks, projects, goals, habits and areas — recording every edit and deliberate non-edit so it can be reviewed and reversed. The agent does the maintenance work; the user just visits to glance at what needs them or wander through what's there.

Enables AI agents to access a local-first personal context and memory layer through MCP tools for bootstrapping user context, semantically searching Markdown vault knowledge, reading files, listing topics, and adding controlled memories. It provides deterministic context retrieval, provenance-cited vector search, and secure vault operations while keeping data local and model-independent.

Gives MCP-compatible coding tools a shared, local-first store of your identity, preferences, decisions, and lessons, so agents start from an approved picture of you instead of a blank slate. Everything lives in inspectable local files that you can preview, edit, approve, or override, and that follow you across tools like Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and Windsurf.
