An MCP server for Messages on your Mac. ChatGPT and Claude can read, search and (if you allow it) send your
iMessages and SMS, from the web, desktop or phone through OAuth, or locally from Claude Code with no server at all.
> [!WARNING]
> This gives an AI model read access to your whole message history and, once you turn sending on, lets it text
> people as you. Read [SECURITY.md](SECURITY.md) before connecting anything, and start with sending off.
## Why this one
- **Remote and local.** A standard remote MCP connector with OAuth 2.1 for ChatGPT and Claude on any device, or a
local stdio server for Claude Code on the same Mac. The Mac never opens an inbound port.
- **People, not phone numbers.** Each person is merged across all their numbers, emails and services (iMessage, SMS,
RCS) using your Contacts. Names, nicknames, saved aliases and group names all work, and an ambiguous name returns
candidates instead of a guess.
- **Everything Messages shows.** Text decoded from `attributedBody`, tapbacks, edits, unsends, inline replies, group
events, link previews, and attachments with image previews and text extraction (PDF text and OCR).
- **Fast search.** A full-text index in a sidecar database, built in the background and kept up to date.
- **Built for agents.** `catch_up` for "what did I miss", chats waiting on your reply, reminders, labels, aliases,
notes, drafts and scheduled messages. Errors come back with a code and a fix the model can act on.
- **Careful sending.** A kill switch, a recipient allowlist and an hourly rate limit, all enforced on the Mac.
Idempotency keys stop double sends, and every send is confirmed in `chat.db` before it is reported as sent.
- **Privacy controls.** Hide chats and people from the agent entirely, and hide one-time verification codes (on by
default). Messages never leave the Mac except in replies to tool calls.
- **Accountable.** Every tool call states its intent, and the bridge keeps a journal of calls on the Mac so you can
see who asked for what and why.
- **Optional extras.** Tapbacks, edit, unsend, read receipts, typing indicators, effects and group management through
the third-party [imsg](https://github.com/openclaw/imsg) helper, for those willing to lower macOS security. Off by
default.
## What the agent sees
Tools answer in compact text an agent can act on: names instead of numbers, ids to pass to the next call, and receipts.
Part of `catch_up` on the mock data (`npm run peek` prints more):
```
- The **bridge** runs on the Mac as a LaunchAgent. It holds the MCP server and every tool, reads `chat.db` and your
Contacts read-only, keeps its own `sidecar.db`, and sends through Messages.app.
- The **gateway** is a small public server. It runs the OAuth sign-in, checks bearer tokens and relays each call to
the bridge over a WebSocket that the Mac opens. It stores no messages.
- The **`imessage` CLI** talks to the bridge over a Unix socket. `imessage mcp` turns it into a stdio MCP server for
Claude Code. This path needs no gateway at all.
More detail in [docs/architecture.md](docs/architecture.md).
## Requirements
- A Mac that stays on and logged in, signed in to Messages. Developed and tested on macOS 26.
- Node.js 22.13 or later. The installer from [nodejs.org](https://nodejs.org) or nvm works best (see
[docs/operations.md](docs/operations.md#running-the-bridge) for why a Homebrew node needs extra care).
- Permissions: Full Disk Access for the bridge (to read `chat.db` and Contacts), and Automation access to Messages
(to send).
- Optional: Xcode Command Line Tools (`xcode-select --install`) for PDF text and OCR; an iPhone with Text Message
Forwarding turned on for this Mac, to send SMS.
- For ChatGPT and Claude on the web or phone: a host for the gateway with HTTPS and WebSockets that runs one instance
without sleeping. Railway works out of the box.
## Quickstart
It isn't published to npm: clone the repository and run it from there.
### Local only, with Claude Code
The quickest way to try it on your real messages. Nothing is exposed to the internet.
```bash
git clone https://github.com/shadow173/imessage-mcp.git
cd imessage-mcp
npm ci
# Bridge config: the example runs local only, with sending off.
mkdir -p ~/.config/imessage-mcp
cp bridge.env.example ~/.config/imessage-mcp/bridge.env
chmod 600 ~/.config/imessage-mcp/bridge.env
npm run install:bridge # builds, installs the LaunchAgent, and walks you through Full Disk Access
npm run install:cli # installs the imessage command into ~/.local/bin
export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH" # if it isn't on your PATH yet; add the line to ~/.zshrc to keep it
imessage status --intent "Checking that the iMessage bridge works"
claude mcp add imessage -- imessage mcp
```
`install:bridge` copies node to a dedicated binary. If that copy doesn't have Full Disk Access yet, the installer
opens System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access, copies the binary's path to your clipboard, and prints
the command that restarts the bridge once you've added it.
When the bridge starts it asks to control Messages, which sending needs; approve that prompt on the Mac. When you're
ready to send, set `SEND_ENABLED=true` in `bridge.env` and restart the bridge with
`launchctl kickstart -k gui/$(id -u)/com.imessage-mcp.bridge`.
To try it without installing a service, give your terminal app Full Disk Access and run
`npm run build && npm run bridge` instead of `install:bridge`. That lets every program you start from that terminal
read your messages, so remove the terminal from Full Disk Access again when you're done.
### Mock mode, no Mac needed
Seeded fake data with the full tool surface. Useful for trying the tools or developing on them.
```bash
npm ci
npm run peek # prints sample output from a few tools, in-process
DEV=1 npm run dev # a gateway on http://localhost:3000/mcp, serving fake data
```
Sign in with the one-time password the dev server prints (or set `OWNER_PASSWORD`). Any MCP client with OAuth
support can connect, for example `claude mcp add --transport http imessage-mock http://localhost:3000/mcp` or the
[MCP Inspector](https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/inspector). Mock data resets on every restart.
### ChatGPT and Claude, anywhere
1. [Deploy the gateway](#deploy-the-gateway).
2. [Point the bridge at it](#connect-the-bridge-to-the-gateway).
3. [Add the connector](#connect-chatgpt-and-claude) in ChatGPT or Claude.
## Deploy the gateway
Generate the secrets first:
```bash
openssl rand -hex 32 # run three times: AUTH_SIGNING_SECRET, BRIDGE_SECRET, LINK_SECRET
npm run hash-password # prompts for your owner password (12+ characters) and prints OWNER_PASSWORD_HASH
```
Keep the plaintext password in a password manager. The gateway only ever sees its hash.
[`.env.example`](.env.example) lists every gateway variable with a comment.
### Railway
The repo includes [`railway.toml`](railway.toml): it builds with `npm run build`, starts with `npm start`, health
checks `/healthz`, and turns app sleeping off.
1. Create a service from your fork of this repository.
2. Generate a domain for it, then set the variables from `.env.example`, with `PUBLIC_URL` set to
`https://<that domain>`.
3. Keep it at one replica, and leave serverless / app sleeping off. The bridge's connection lives in one process.
### Any other Node host
Fly.io, Render, a VPS or a container all work if the host:
- runs Node.js 22.13 or later, as exactly **one** always-on instance;
- terminates HTTPS and passes WebSocket upgrades on `/bridge` through to the app;
- allows requests to run for at least 120 seconds (a tool call can take up to 110 s, and `get_updates` long-polls).
```bash
npm ci && npm run build
cp .env.example .env # fill it in; never commit it
node --env-file=.env dist/gateway.js
```
The gateway listens on `0.0.0.0` and `PORT` (default 3000); set `HOST=127.0.0.1` when a reverse proxy on the same
machine is the only thing that should reach it. It refuses to start until every required variable is set. Point the
platform's health check at `GET /healthz`.
## Connect the bridge to the gateway
In `~/.config/imessage-mcp/bridge.env`, set `GATEWAY_URL` to the gateway's `PUBLIC_URL`, and `BRIDGE_SECRET` and
`LINK_SECRET` to the same values as on the gateway. Then restart the bridge:
```bash
launchctl kickstart -k gui/$(id -u)/com.imessage-mcp.bridge
tail -f ~/Library/Logs/imessage-mcp/bridge.log # look for "connected to https://..."
```
Run only one bridge. If a second one connects, the gateway keeps the newest connection and the older bridge exits.
## Connect ChatGPT and Claude
Your connector URL is `https://<your-gateway>.example/mcp`. Signing in shows the gateway's consent page: enter the
owner password and choose what to grant. **Read** is always included; **Organize** (labels, aliases, notes,
reminders) and **Send as you** are optional, per connection.
- **ChatGPT:** add a custom MCP server with that URL and OAuth authentication. At the time of writing this is under
Plugins → + → Add custom MCP server; custom servers may need developer mode, and menu names change often. Deep
research uses the `search` and `fetch` tools.
- **Claude (web, desktop, mobile):** Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector, with that URL. Connectors added on
the web are available in the apps too.
- **Claude Code, remotely:** `claude mcp add --transport http imessage https://<your-gateway>.example/mcp`, then run
`/mcp` to sign in. On the Mac itself, the local route below is simpler.
## The `imessage` CLI and Claude Code
`npm run install:cli` installs `imessage` into `~/.local/bin`. It talks to the bridge over its local socket: no
internet and no OAuth. Every command that reads or sends needs `--intent` with the goal behind it, which is saved in
the journal on the Mac.
```bash
imessage catchup --intent "Morning summary of what I missed"
imessage search cabin --from "Sam" --context 2 --intent "Finding the cabin address Sam sent"
imessage send "Sam" "running 10 min late" --intent "Letting Sam know I'm late for dinner"
imessage watch --from "Sam" --once --timeout 2h --intent "Waiting for Sam to confirm dinner"
imessage journal --since 1d # past tool calls with their intents and outcomes
imessage --help # every command; imessage <command> --help for its flags
```
| Exit code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 0 | OK |
| 1 | Error |
| 2 | `watch` timed out |
| 3 | Needs `--confirm`: a recipient outside Contacts (with `SEND_ALLOWLIST=known`), or leaving a group |
| 4 | Ambiguous name: candidates are printed; pass a person_id or chat_id |
| 5 | The bridge isn't running |
| 64 | Bad usage, including a missing `--intent` |
Two ways to use it from Claude Code:
- **As MCP tools:** `claude mcp add imessage -- imessage mcp`. The same tools as the remote connector, with every
scope, over stdio.
- **As a skill:** copy [`skills/imessage`](skills/imessage/SKILL.md) to `~/.claude/skills/imessage`. The skill
teaches Claude the CLI, including waiting for a reply in the background with `imessage watch`.
## Tools
Tools come in groups ("tiers"). `TIERS` on the bridge decides which groups exist; the OAuth scopes a client was
granted decide which it may call. Every tool takes an `intent` argument, the goal behind the call, which the bridge
saves in its journal. `mark_read` needs `messages.send` to mark a chat read (that sends read receipts), but only
`messages.organize` to mark it unread.
<!-- tools-table:start (generated by `npx tsx scripts/dev/tools-table.ts --write` from tools/list; don't edit) -->
| `search`¹ | Search the owner's messages and conversations by words, not meaning | Read-only |
| `fetch`¹ | Full text for one search result: a message with context, a conversation, or an attachment's text | Read-only |
¹ `intent` is optional for `search` and `fetch`, whose arguments the ChatGPT contract fixes.
<!-- tools-table:end -->
`npm run describe` prints the server instructions and every tool's full description and arguments, exactly as an
agent sees them, on mock data.
## Configuration
Booleans take `true` or `false` (`1`/`0`, `yes`/`no` and `on`/`off` also work); lists are comma-separated. A value
that doesn't parse stops the process at startup instead of falling back to a default.
### Gateway
| Variable | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| `PUBLIC_URL` | required | Public origin, with no trailing slash or `/mcp`. Must be `https` (plain `http` only for localhost). The OAuth issuer and resource come only from it. |
| `MODE` | required | `relay` runs the tools on your Mac; `mock` serves seeded fake data. |
| `AUTH_SIGNING_SECRET` | required | At least 32 characters. Signs tokens and client ids. Rotating it signs everyone out and every connector must be added again. |
| `OWNER_PASSWORD_HASH` | required | From `npm run hash-password`. |
| `BRIDGE_SECRET` | required in relay | At least 32 characters; the bridge presents it when it connects. Same value on the bridge. |
| `LINK_SECRET` | required in relay | At least 32 characters. Signs file and citation links. Same value on the bridge. |
| `OWNER_TZ` | the host's time zone | IANA time zone, e.g. `Europe/Berlin`. Servers usually run in UTC, so set it to the same value as on the bridge. |
| `TIERS` | `read,send,org,pa,gpt` | Only shapes the tool list served before the bridge first connects after a deploy. Match the bridge's `TIERS`; the gateway logs a warning when they differ. |
| `TOKEN_VERSION` | `1` | Bump to sign out every client. |
| `ACCESS_TOKEN_TTL_S` | `3600` | Access token lifetime, in seconds. |
| `REFRESH_TOKEN_TTL_S` | `2592000` (30 days) | Refresh tokens rotate on every use, so this is how long a client can sit unused before it must sign in again. |
| `ALLOWED_REDIRECT_URIS` | empty | Extra exact OAuth redirect URIs. ChatGPT, Claude and loopback addresses are always allowed. |
| `CIMD_HOSTS` | `chatgpt.com,claude.ai,claude.com` | Hosts allowed to serve OAuth client metadata documents. |
| `HOST` | `0.0.0.0` (`127.0.0.1` with `DEV=1`) | Interface to listen on. |
| `PORT` | `3000` | Port to listen on. |
| `DEV` | unset | `1` for local development only: required variables may be omitted (a random password is printed at startup), the issuer may come from request headers, `MODE` defaults to `mock`, and the server listens on `127.0.0.1`. Refused together with `NODE_ENV=production`. Never set it on a public host. |
| `OWNER_PASSWORD` | unset | With `DEV=1` only: a plaintext password instead of a hash. Ignored otherwise. |
| `ALLOW_INSECURE_CIMD` | `false` | With `DEV=1` only: allow non-HTTPS client metadata URLs. |
| `NODE_ENV` | unset | Optional. `production` makes the gateway refuse to start if `DEV=1` is ever set by mistake; nothing else reads it. |
In mock mode the tools run on the gateway, so these bridge variables apply there too: `SEND_ENABLED`,
`SEND_ALLOWLIST`, `SEND_RATE_LIMIT_PER_HOUR`, `REDACT_CODES`, and `MOCK_AUTO_REPLY` (default `true`: named contacts
reply 15 to 30 seconds after you message them).
### Bridge
Set in `~/.config/imessage-mcp/bridge.env` (see [`bridge.env.example`](bridge.env.example) for the format) or the
environment, which wins. Restart the bridge after changing it.
| Variable | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| `GATEWAY_URL` | unset | The gateway's `PUBLIC_URL`. Unset means local only: just the CLI and `imessage mcp`. |
| `BRIDGE_SECRET` | required with a gateway | Same value as on the gateway. |
| `LINK_SECRET` | required with a gateway | At least 32 characters. Same value as on the gateway. |
| `SEND_ENABLED` | `true` | Kill switch for everything recipients see: sends, scheduled drafts, tapbacks, edits, typing, read receipts and group changes. `unsend_message` still works. The example config ships with `false`. |
| `SEND_ALLOWLIST` | `known` | `known` (anyone in Contacts; anyone else needs confirmation in the conversation), `all`, or a list of person_ids, numbers, emails and chat_ids. A list is a hard boundary that confirmation can't override; a group passes only when its chat_id or every member is listed, and an empty value allows nobody. Covers sends, scheduled drafts, tapbacks, edits, and creating, adding to, renaming or changing the photo of a group. |
| `SEND_RATE_LIMIT_PER_HOUR` | `30` | Counts sends, scheduled sends, tapbacks, edits and group create/add/rename/photo. |
| `REDACT_CODES` | `true` | Hides one-time verification codes (`[verification code hidden]`) in message text, extracted attachment text and the search index, from everyone including you. `false` shows them, so an agent can finish a sign-in for you, at the cost described in [SECURITY.md](SECURITY.md). Changing it rebuilds the search index once. |
| `HIDE` | empty | chat_ids, numbers, emails or Contacts names the agent must never see. A hidden person's 1:1 chats and every group they are in disappear from every tool. |
| `TIERS` | `read,send,org,gpt`, plus `pa` with `PRIVATE_API=imsg` | Tool groups to expose. `read` is always on. If you set it, include `pa` yourself to use the Private API tier. |
| `OWNER_TZ` | the Mac's time zone | IANA time zone for every time in and out. |
| `PRIVATE_API` | off | `imsg` turns on the [Private API tier](#private-api-tier-optional). |
| `IMSG_PATH` | `imsg` | Path to the imsg binary. |
| `IMSG_AUTO_LAUNCH` | `false` | Re-inject the imsg helper when Messages restarts without it. This quits Messages, at most every 10 minutes. |
| `DATA_DIR` | `~/Library/Application Support/imessage-mcp` | Where `sidecar.db` and the socket live. |
| `CHAT_DB` | `~/Library/Messages/chat.db` | The Messages database. |
| `ADDRESSBOOK_DIR` | `~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook` | The Contacts databases. |
| `ATTACHMENT_STAGE_DIR` | `~/Library/Messages/Attachments/imessage-mcp` | Where outgoing files are staged for Messages. |
| `IMESSAGE_SOCKET` | `$DATA_DIR/bridge.sock` | The local socket for the CLI. The older name `LOCAL_SOCKET` still works, with a warning in the log. |
| `BRIDGE_ENV_FILE` | `~/.config/imessage-mcp/bridge.env` | Environment only: which config file to load. |
### CLI
| Variable | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| `IMESSAGE_SOCKET` | `$DATA_DIR/bridge.sock` | The bridge's socket, found the same way as on the bridge. Set it only if the bridge's `IMESSAGE_SOCKET` or `DATA_DIR` differs from your shell's. |
| `IMESSAGE_INTENT` | unset | Used when `--intent` is not given. |
## Security model
The short version (the full threat model is in [SECURITY.md](SECURITY.md)):
- Message text comes from anyone who can text you, so treat every connected model as exposed to prompt injection.
The controls that matter don't depend on the model: `SEND_ENABLED`, an explicit `SEND_ALLOWLIST`, the rate limit,
`HIDE`, `REDACT_CODES` and the scopes you grant. All of them are enforced on the Mac.
- With the default allowlist, the "user confirmed" flag that lets a message go to someone outside your Contacts is set
by the model. It is a speed bump, not an approval step. An explicit list is a hard boundary the model can't
override.
- The gateway sees message text in transit and stores none. OAuth is stateless: `TOKEN_VERSION` is the reliable way to
sign everyone out.
- File links last 15 minutes and ChatGPT citation links last 30 days. Both work for anyone who has the URL.
- Any process running as your macOS user can use the bridge's local socket.
- One instance serves one person. Never share it.
Report vulnerabilities privately; see [SECURITY.md](SECURITY.md#reporting-a-vulnerability).
## Private API tier (optional)
> [!CAUTION]
> Off by default, and most people should leave it off. It requires turning off **System Integrity Protection** and
> **library validation for the whole Mac**, and it loads a third-party helper into Messages.app. That weakens the
> security of everything on the machine, can break with any macOS update, and may conflict with Apple's terms. Don't
> use it on a work or managed Mac, on a Mac that holds other sensitive data, or if you can't get to the Mac in person
> (turning SIP off and on needs Recovery Mode).
Reading, searching, sending text and files, drafts and scheduled messages all work without it. With
`PRIVATE_API=imsg`, the bridge drives [imsg](https://github.com/openclaw/imsg) (MIT), a separate project you install
yourself; it is not bundled or modified here. That adds tapbacks on any message, edit, unsend, mark read or unread,
typing indicators, inline replies, message effects, and creating, renaming and managing group chats. Each call checks
that the helper is loaded and waits for `chat.db` to show the change; an uncertain result comes back as
`outcome_unknown` rather than a guess.
Setup, and how to undo it (listed first), are in [docs/private-api.md](docs/private-api.md).
## Operations
Running the bridge day to day, macOS settings (sleep, FileVault, permissions), changing the password, rotating
secrets, upgrading, troubleshooting and uninstalling: see [docs/operations.md](docs/operations.md).
## Development
```bash
npm ci
npm run check # typecheck, lint (Biome), tests, and that the Tools table above is current
npm test # mock tools, OAuth, relay, and the live store against a synthetic chat.db
DEV=1 npm run dev # mock gateway with live reload
npm run peek # sample tool output on mock data
npm run format # format and fix lint issues
```
The test suite builds synthetic fixture databases in a temporary directory and never touches your real messages,
Contacts or Messages.app. Binary fixtures are committed, so it calls no macOS command-line tools, and CI runs it on
macOS and Linux. See
[CONTRIBUTING.md](CONTRIBUTING.md) before opening a pull request, and [scripts/README.md](scripts/README.md) for what
each script touches.
## Acknowledgements
- [imsg](https://github.com/openclaw/imsg) (MIT) powers the optional Private API tier as an external tool. Its send
verification and macOS 26 notes also informed the default send path.
- [imessage-exporter](https://github.com/ReagentX/imessage-exporter) and
[crabstep](https://github.com/ReagentX/crabstep) documented the `chat.db` schema and the typedstream format. The
decoders here are independent implementations; no code was copied.
- [BlueBubbles server](https://github.com/BlueBubblesApp/bluebubbles-server) was the reference for an HTTP surface
over iMessage and for date-window change detection.
- Tool design borrowed ideas (not code) from the
