Server Configuration
Describes the environment variables required to run the server.
| Name | Required | Description | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
| PLAID_ENV | No | Plaid environment to use. Supported values are 'sandbox' and 'production'; the default is sandbox. Use 'production' (with your production secret) for real bank connections. | sandbox |
| FIN_DB_PATH | No | Optional explicit database path. Without it, sandbox uses ~/.fin/sandbox.db and production uses ~/.fin/fin.db. An explicit MCP --env-file anchors relative database paths to that file's directory. | |
| PLAID_SECRET | Yes | Your environment-specific Plaid secret. | |
| PLAID_CLIENT_ID | Yes | Your Plaid client ID. | |
| PYTHONUNBUFFERED | No | Set to '1' in the MCP server env block (as shown in the Claude Desktop configuration example). |

Guidance the server publishes about itself, which clients place ahead of the tool catalog so the model reads it before choosing anything.
