list_embedding_providers

Retrieve a list of supported embedding providers with labels and notes to help choose one before syncing to a vector database.

Instructions

Returns all supported embedding providers with labels and notes. Call this to help the user choose an embedding provider before sync_to_vectordb. After the user chooses, call verify_provider_key to get the live model list.

Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

No annotations are provided, so the description carries the full burden. It states the tool returns data (labels, notes) but does not explicitly mention that it is a read-only operation or any behavioral traits like authentication requirements. However, for a simple list tool, it is fairly transparent.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness5/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Two sentences with no waste. The first sentence states the main purpose, the second provides usage context and next steps.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

Given no output schema and no annotations, the description is relatively complete. It explains the return value, usage context, and links to related tools. Could be improved by mentioning output format or examples, but it is sufficient for a simple list tool.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

The tool has no parameters (schema coverage 100%), so the baseline is 4. The description adds meaning by specifying that the output includes labels and notes, which is beyond the empty schema.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

The description clearly identifies the tool as returning supported embedding providers with labels and notes, and distinguishes it from sibling tools like list_vector_db_providers and verify_provider_key.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines5/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

The description explicitly instructs when to use: before sync_to_vectordb to help the user choose, and then to call verify_provider_key afterward. This provides clear contextual guidance and alternatives.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
