references-mcp

An MCP server that brings curated references to your agent so you don't have to go looking.

Before your agent designs a landing page, cuts a launch film, drafts an ad or writes a post, it calls references_suggest. It gets back a short set of directions drawn from work that has already been judged good: award winners, editor-picked galleries, winning ads, top posts. It shows them to you, you pick one, and it builds against that pick instead of an AI default.

What comes back

references_suggest({ intent: "landing page for an AI lab" }) returns:

  • directions: ranked references, each with a url and a take (the specific thing to carry over). Your own library ranks first, then a canon of proven work.

  • fresh: what's live right now:

    • For your project (video, motion, ads, animation, social; needs yt-dlp): the launch films product makers in your space put out on their own channels (dev tool → Cursor, Warp, Supabase; health → WHOOP, Headspace; fintech → Monzo, Ramp, Plaid; 54 channels across 13 spaces), launch films of YC companies in your space (fintech → Alaan, Verto, Aspire…), and proven work searched on the global market: made work only (films, campaigns, commercials, launches), no trailers, tutorials, samples, explainers or listicles.

    • The daily shelf: this repo rebuilds shelf/daily.json every day (GitHub Action), from the latest uploads of brands known for the craft (Apple, Nike, Spotify, Airbnb, Duolingo, Figma, Kurzgesagt...) ranked by views, plus every live curation below.

    • Live curations: Awwwards Sites of the Day, One Page Love, Ads of the World, Vimeo Staff Picks, Motionographer, STASH, Vimeo Motion Graphics, Product Hunt, GitHub Trending, Hacker News best.

  • curations: where to go deeper for that medium: Cannes Lions, D&AD, The One Show, Clios, Effies, Mobbin, Godly, Land-book, Pitch Deck Hunt, Meta Ad Library, TikTok Creative Center, and more.

Mediums: ui · landing · app · deck · video · motion · animation · social · post · ad. If none is given, it is inferred from the intent ("pitch deck" → deck, "reel" → video, "campaign" → ad).

Install

Claude Code (server + picker): one plugin brings the server and a mod that shows suggestions as picture cards in a row above your prompt.

claude plugin marketplace add sameeeeeeep/references-mcp
claude plugin install references@references

Restart Claude Code (or start a new session). Then ask for anything with a look ("make me a launch video"), or type /refs <what you're making> (a skill, so it shows in the desktop app's / menu too).

Any MCP client (server only):

claude mcp add references -s user -- npx -y github:sameeeeeeep/references-mcp

Or clone it and point the client at node src/server.mjs.

The picker

When Claude calls references_suggest, up to six cards appear in a row above your prompt (four at a time, ‹ › for the rest): the best directions plus one fresh pick per live source. Each card is a small carousel of the reference's own pictures (its page's gallery) or, for videos, real frames that play. Pick one, write your message as usual, and the pick is attached to it for Claude. Preview opens a side pane with the reference large; Open / Play goes to the original. Thumbnails and frames are made on your machine (curl + sips on macOS, yt-dlp + ffmpeg for video frames); without them the cards show text. Desktop app and terminal both draw it.

Curated for the project

Claude doesn't show the top of a list. It calls references_suggest with the project's context and pool: 60, reads the pool against the project and your taste, and calls references_shortlist with its best 8, each with a one-line why ("For you: …" on the card). What you've been shown sinks for a month, winners rank ahead, and the order varies, so two asks never open on the same ten.

Narrowing

Every answer carries facets: the tags among the matching references, with how many carry each ("Scrolling 190 · Storytelling 70 · Minimal 25"). Pass picks back as filters and only references carrying all of them return. The style quiz's options map onto these tags, and the band shows them as chips (✕ to drop one, + to add one). Behind landing, UI and app sits a catalog of judged winners only (Awwwards Sites of the Day and Honorable Mentions, about 2,000, each with its style tags) plus every live YC company's site whose preview picture really loads (checked one by one, tagged by industry and batch), refreshed daily. Nominees never get in; the two sources take turns so neither crowds the other out. If a mix leaves too few, the last filter loosens and the answer says which.

Your library

A library is just folders. Each .md is one reference. Its image is the same-named sibling, or the folder's only image:

~/.references/brand/ref-1.md
~/.references/brand/ref-1.png
---
medium: landing
title: Our old hero
url: https://example.com
tags: lime, dark
---
Lime on black, one huge headline, product shot below the fold.

Frontmatter is optional. Without it, the medium is guessed from the folder name and the text.

What it does not do

It links, it never rehosts: every card points at the original post. Instagram serves nothing without a logged-in session, so social references come from the same brands' YouTube Shorts (Duolingo, Spotify, Nike, Red Bull, GoPro, Netflix, Ryanair, Wendy's...), where most post the same vertical cuts. TikTok is not in: it is unreachable in some regions.

How it stays light

The server only links to the work and never rehosts it. Live sources are fetched only when a suggestion is asked for, then cached for 12 hours. If a source is down, the last cache is used, or nothing; a suggestion never fails because a site did.

Checking quality

node scripts/evaluate.mjs runs 26 very different projects across landing, UI, video, ads, motion, animation and social and reports, per set: cards, how many have a picture, how many are on-brief, junk, canon and the overlap between projects. npm test holds the stress bar (12 landing projects: overlap ≤5%, fit ≥6/8).

Add a curation

Sources live in src/sources.mjs. A pointer is one line. A live source also needs an adapter: a url plus a parse(text) → [{ title, url, image?, by?, note? }]. The canon is in src/catalog.mjs.
