Cache Cited-By Results

cache_cited_by

Fetch and cache citing cases for a citation from jade.io. Saves metadata for all results and downloads source files for top entries.

Instructions

Fetch citing cases for a cached citation from jade.io and store them locally. Metadata is saved for all results; source files are downloaded for the top N entries (controlled by AUSLAW_CITED_BY_DOWNLOAD_LIMIT, default 5). Requires JADE_SESSION_COOKIE. Can be disabled via AUSLAW_CACHE_CITED_BY=false.

Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

No annotations provided, so description carries full burden. It discloses fetching source, local storage, metadata vs file download control, and environmental prerequisites. Missing details on idempotency or potential overwriting behavior, but overall transparent.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness5/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Three sentences, each serving a distinct purpose: action, detailed behavior, and requirements. No redundancy, front-loaded with primary function.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

Given simple input (one param), no output schema, and no annotations, the description covers the process, dependencies, and configuration thoroughly. Adequate for agent decision-making.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Single parameter with 100% schema coverage. Description adds context by linking 'citeKey' to 'parent case' and clarifying purpose of the fetch, adding value beyond schema.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose4/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

The description clearly states the action ('fetch citing cases') and the destination ('store them locally'). While it distinguishes from 'search_citing_cases' by mentioning caching, it does not explicitly contrast with siblings.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines3/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Describes requirements (cookie) and configuration (env variable to disable), but lacks explicit when-to-use or when-not-to-use guidance relative to similar tools like 'search_citing_cases'.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
