Server Configuration
Describes the environment variables required to run the server.

| DEV_TOKENS | No | Comma-separated static bearer tokens for local development, e.g. `dev-token=you@example.com`. Required when AUTH_MODE=dev. | |
| EMBEDDINGS | No | Set to `off` to fall back to keyword-only search, e.g. for machines without internet access. Embeddings otherwise run in-process on CPU using bge-small-en-v1.5 (int8, ~35 MB, downloaded once). | |
| ADMIN_EMAILS | No | Comma-separated emails of admins. Approving is limited to scope owners and admins. | |
| DATABASE_URL | No | Postgres connection string, e.g. postgres://cairn:cairn@localhost:5432/cairn. Used when running the server without Docker (the native installer writes it to /etc/cairn/cairn.env). | |
| CF_ACCESS_AUD | No | AUD tag of the self-hosted Cloudflare Access application. Required when AUTH_MODE=cloudflare. | |
| COOKIE_SECURE | No | Whether the session cookie is marked Secure. The cookie is Secure whenever the request came in over https. | |
| POSTGRES_PASSWORD | No | Password for the bundled Postgres container. Set in .env before running `docker compose up -d --build`. | |
| SESSION_TTL_HOURS | No | Session length in hours for browser sessions. | |
| DUPLICATE_SIMILARITY | No | Similarity threshold for duplicate detection on writes. | |
| CF_ACCESS_TEAM_DOMAIN | No | Cloudflare Access team domain, e.g. https://<team>.cloudflareaccess.com. Required when AUTH_MODE=cloudflare. | |
| SEARCH_MIN_SIMILARITY | No | Minimum embedding similarity for hybrid search results. | |
| CLOUDFLARE_TUNNEL_TOKEN | No | Cloudflare Tunnel token, set in .env to route a hostname to http://server:8080. |
