discord_join_thread

Idempotent

Adds the bot user to an unarchived Discord thread so it can participate in that conversation; safe to retry.

Instructions

Add the bot user to a thread. The thread must not be archived. To remove the bot from a thread, use discord_leave_thread; to add another user, use discord_add_thread_member. No special bot permissions. Changes Discord data; safe to retry.

Input Schema

A4.5/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already declare readOnly=false, idempotent=true, destructive=false and openWorld=true, so the safety profile is covered. The description still adds real value beyond them: the archived-thread precondition and the 'No special bot permissions' note are not derivable from annotations, though 'safe to retry' largely restates idempotentHint.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness5/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Four short sentences, each doing distinct work: action, precondition, sibling routing, and permission/retry behavior. Front-loaded with the action and free of filler.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For a one-parameter mutation with an output schema and full annotation coverage, the description supplies everything an agent needs: what it does, the blocking condition, the alternatives, and permission requirements.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

There is a single parameter with 100% schema description coverage ('ID of the thread to join'), so the schema already carries the semantics. The description adds no format or sourcing detail beyond it, making the baseline 3 appropriate.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb and resource ('Add the bot user to a thread') and immediately distinguishes itself from the two nearest siblings, discord_leave_thread and discord_add_thread_member, by naming them explicitly.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines5/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Gives an explicit precondition ('The thread must not be archived') and routes the agent to the correct alternative for both adjacent cases: removing the bot and adding a different user. Nothing is left to inference.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
