Server Configuration

Describes the environment variables required to run the server.

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
OPENAI_API_KEYNoOpenAI API key used for Whisper transcription of voice/audio messages (e.g. sk-proj-...). Fastest, highest-quality, non-blocking transcription option.
autoTranscribeNoWhen enabled (the default), the server transcribes all voice/audio messages in group chats, even ones that don't mention the bot, so get_history and injected context show spoken text. Disable with /telegram:access set autoTranscribe false.true
TELEGRAPH_ENABLEDNoDisabled by default because posts are publicly accessible by URL. Set to true to enable the create_telegraph_page tool for publishing long-form content to Telegraph (telegra.ph) as Instant View articles.false
TELEGRAM_BOT_TOKENYesThe bot token from BotFather (e.g. 123456789:AAHfiqksKZ8...). Written to ~/.claude/channels/telegram/.env by /telegram:configure, or set in the shell environment (shell takes precedence). The server won't connect without it.
OPENAI_WHISPER_MODELNoThe OpenAI transcription model to use instead of the default whisper-1 (e.g. gpt-4o-transcribe).whisper-1
TELEGRAM_ROUTER_MODELNoConfigurable two-tier model routing: Haiku (fast, 200K), Sonnet (balanced, 1M), or Opus (deep, 1M). Complex tasks auto-escalate to Opus via subagents.
TELEGRAM_ESCALATION_MODELNoThe model that complex tasks auto-escalate to via subagents.
