Configure executor functions, custom commands and size

gma3_configure_executor

Configure grandMA3 executor keys, faders, encoders, custom commands, size, fix, and lock settings by page and executor, with validation, preview, and readback checks.

Instructions

Set key, MA-key, fader, encoder and MA-encoder functions, custom command triplets, Width/Height and Fix of the Sequence or Macro executor at Page . by writing its properties. Unlike 'Assign At', this never clears an unrelated unpress function. Functions are validated against the assigned class before writes; Macro faders/encoders allow only Empty. Sequence Flash, Temp, Swap, Black and Time are key-only. Custom command text is stored, never executed; command requires explicit enabled because the console auto-enables text. The flag is written after the text, even when initially unchanged. Commands preserve exact case and internal spaces; edge whitespace is refused because object reads trim it. Encoder continuous functions and left/right actions or enabled custom commands are mutually exclusive: conflicting requests fail before reads, and implicit mode clears are reported and verified. Storing disabled encoder text against an active continuous mode is refused unless that mode is explicitly cleared. Size changes check complete page occupancy, expanded footprints and proxies; collisions, unreadable or failed enumeration and expansion beyond page bounds are refused before any write. Shrinks precede growth. Executor settings belong to this executor only; sequence settings (Wrap Around, priority, ...) are configured with gma3_configure_sequence. lock: true/false sets the executor's own Lock. A page lock also blocks executor changes. Never sends Go, On, Off, Toggle, Flash or any other playback keyword and does not touch the selection, the programmer or fader levels; playback state is read before and after (playback.activeBefore/activeAfter) and configuration alone does not start playback. A locked target is refused before anything is sent (the console silently ignores writes to it) unless unlock: true, which unlocks the owning object, applies the changes and locks it again (relocking is attempted even after a failed change). preview: true performs only the reads and returns the planned changes (from -> to); values already set are reported as unchanged and never sent. Each value is written with one 'set' request whose reply must read back the requested value, because the console silently keeps the previous value for anything it does not accept; the first failure stops the remaining changes. A value that could not be read is unknown, never a default: the call is refused when a value the plan depends on (requested property, Lock, page Lock) is missing, and a set reply without a value is an unknown step. verify (default true) reads every changed property and the lock back. Mutations from this server are serialised, but not isolated from other operators or clients.

Input Schema

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
fixNoFix the executor on every page (Fix).
lockNoFinal state of the executor's own Lock; lock: false on a locked executor removes the lock (explicit unlock).
pageYesExecutor page number (1-9999); the page must exist.
faderNoFader: Sequence choices Empty, Master, X, XA, XB, Temp, Rate, Speed, Time; Macro choices Empty. Empty clears it.
widthNoWidth in executor cells, 1-5. Full page occupancy is checked first; overlapping assignments, incomplete scans, page boundaries and Xkey expansion are refused.
heightNoHeight in executor rows, 1-4. Extends toward higher numbered rows, never beyond row 4. The tool refuses collisions before changing size.
unlockNoAllow unlocking a locked executor and/or page for this call; the locks are restored afterwards (default false: refuse).
verifyNoRead the changed properties back and compare (default true).
encoderNoEncoder: Sequence choices Empty, Master, X, XA, XB, Temp, Rate, Speed, Time; Macro choices Empty. Empty clears it.
previewNoOnly read and report the planned changes (default false).
executorYesExecutor number on that page: 101-190 (keys), 201-290 (faders), 301-390 and 401-490 (knobs), plus the Xkeys 191-198 and 291-298.

TDQS

A4.8/5.0
Behavior5/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

With no annotations, the description carries the full burden and does so: writes are validated against the assigned class, locked targets are refused up-front (the console silently ignores writes), unlock applies changes then relocks even after failure, first set failure aborts the rest, read-backs must match, unreadable values are treated as unknown rather than defaulted, and mutations are serialised but not isolated from other clients. Shrink-before-growth ordering and pre-write collision checks are exactly the kind of non-obvious behavior an agent needs.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

The purpose and the primary alternative are front-loaded, and every sentence carries substantive constraints. However, the block is extremely dense and several sentences chain multiple rules with semicolons (lock/preview/verify/failure handling), making it harder to scan than a short bulleted structure would be.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For a 22-parameter mutation tool with no output schema, the description covers what an agent must know: preview returns planned from -> to changes, verify defaults true and reads back, playback state is reported as activeBefore/activeAfter, unchanged values are never sent, and refusal conditions (page lock, collisions, footprint expansion, unknown dependencies) are enumerated. Return-value behavior is described even though no output schema exists.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 100%, so the baseline is 3, but the description adds cross-parameter meaning the schema cannot express: encoder continuous functions vs discrete custom commands are mutually exclusive and conflicting requests fail before reads, custom command text is stored but never executed and requires explicit enabled because the console auto-enables it, and edge whitespace is refused because object reads trim it. This goes meaningfully beyond the per-field schema descriptions.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

The opening sentence names a specific verb (Set), the exact resources (key/MA-key/fader/encoder functions, custom command triplets, Width/Height, Fix), the target (Sequence or Macro executor at Page <p>.<e>) and the mechanism (writing properties). It also distinguishes itself from 'Assign <function> At' in the same breath, so an agent can select it without ambiguity.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines5/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Explicitly routes the agent elsewhere: sequence-level settings (Wrap Around, priority) belong to gma3_configure_sequence, and the difference from 'Assign <function> At' is spelled out. It also states what this tool will never do (send Go/On/Off/Toggle/Flash, touch selection, programmer or fader levels), which is a clear when-not-to-use boundary.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
