Server Configuration

Describes the environment variables required to run the server.

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
PORTUNUS_HOMENoDirectory where Portunus stores its vault state (default: ~/.portunus, mode 0700). Must be a real, persistent volume for the local-encrypted backend; losing it makes previously-stored secrets permanently unrecoverable.~/.portunus
SSL_CERT_FILENoOptional path to a CA bundle, useful on macOS python.org installs when OAuth token minting fails with an SSL certificate error (set to the output of `python3 -c "import certifi; print(certifi.where())"`). Not required for normal MCP operation.
PORTUNUS_UI_URLNoURL that `portunus ui open` uses to open the local UI (default: http://localhost:3000). Not required by the MCP server itself.http://localhost:3000
PORTUNUS_BACKENDNoSelects the ARCA backend: local (default, local-encrypted vault), gcloud (GCP Secret Manager, keyless via Workload Identity Federation), aws (AWS Secrets Manager stub that fails clearly), or mock (tests/dry-runs).local
DOSTAL_SECRETS_HOMENoLegacy fallback for the vault home directory when PORTUNUS_HOME is not set.
PORTUNUS_GCP_PROJECTNoGCP project ID used for zero-config single-project GCP Secret Manager access when no vault-bindings.json file exists.
PORTUNUS_NO_UPDATE_CHECKNoSet to 1 to opt out of the throttled once-a-day update-available notice printed to stderr. The server never installs updates automatically.
PORTUNUS_GCP_WIF_AUDIENCENoWorkload Identity Federation audience used for keyless GCP authentication when no vault-bindings.json file exists.
