Describes the environment variables required to run the server.

| state | No | Private directory used for broker state (passed as `--state /private/directory`). All commands accept `--state /private/directory` before the subcommand. The local OS user is the trust boundary; state and the broker socket are private to that user. | |
| identity | Yes | Path to this session's identity file (passed as `--identity /absolute/path/to/this-session-identity.json`). The identity file contains a private session credential and is returned by `agent-wire register`. Configure a stdio MCP server that runs: agent-wire mcp --identity /absolute/path/to/this-session-identity.json. A bound MCP server belongs to one native conversation, so do not share that configuration between unrelated Codex threads. |
