Server Configuration
Describes the environment variables required to run the server.
| Name | Required | Description | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
| PORT | No | The port the local Tandem server listens on (default `7891`). | |
| TANDEM_BIN | No | Path to the `tandem` binary to use; wins over `~/.tandem/bin/tandem` or a `tandem` on your `PATH`. | |
| TANDEM_VERSION | No | Pins the version of the `tandem` binary that `up`/autostart downloads (default: latest release). | |
| TANDEM_DATA_DIR | No | Moves the whole Tandem data directory (default `~/.tandem`), which holds the SQLite database, JWT secret, images and logs. | |
| TANDEM_AUTOSTART | No | The MCP server starts the local backend itself the first time a tool call finds nothing listening locally. Set to `TANDEM_AUTOSTART=0` to turn that off. | |
| TANDEM_FULL_TOOLS | No | Set to `TANDEM_FULL_TOOLS=1` to opt in to the raw CRUD tool surface (documents, notes, roadmap items, raw actions) instead of the default 18-tool intent facade. | |
| TANDEM_CANVAS_CODE | No | The code of the Tandem canvas this repo's sessions should connect to. Written into the repo's `.mcp.json` as `TANDEM_CANVAS_CODE` by `npx -y @jaximus/tandem-mcp init --write`. | |
| TANDEM_AUTOSTART_OPEN | No | Set to `TANDEM_AUTOSTART_OPEN=1` to also open the browser when the backend is autostarted. |
