Spacemail for Claude

by evilash182

Spacemail is the affordable business email from Spaceship. This extension connects it to Claude (and any other app that supports the Model Context Protocol), so you can just ask:

"Has anything come in on BoxCart today?"

"Find the email from Jane about delivery zones and draft a friendly reply."

"Summarise this week's unread mail across all my inboxes."

"Archive all the Stripe receipts from October."

Why this one

  • Drafts first. Claude saves replies in your Drafts folder so you can check them before they go. Direct sending is off unless you turn it on.

  • Nothing is ever permanently deleted. "Delete" moves mail to Trash, like it does in webmail.

  • Several mailboxes at once. Connect every business inbox and check them all in one question.

  • Private. Your password stays on your computer (in the system keychain with Claude Desktop) and is only ever sent to Spacemail's own servers. There's no middleman.

  • Plain-English errors. If a password is wrong or a folder doesn't exist, you're told what to fix, not shown a stack trace.

  • Proper threading. Replies keep the Re: subject, quote the original and carry the reply headers, so they land in the right conversation.

Install

Claude Desktop (easiest)

  1. Download spacemail.mcpb (from the latest release).

  2. Double-click it. Claude Desktop opens and shows an install screen.

  3. Enter your Spacemail address and password, and optionally a nickname like "BoxCart". Add up to three mailboxes.

  4. Click Install, then ask Claude: "Test my Spacemail connection."

Claude Code

claude mcp add spacemail \
  -e SPACEMAIL_EMAIL=hello@yourbusiness.com \
  -e SPACEMAIL_PASSWORD='your-mailbox-password' \
  -- npx -y spacemail-mcp

Other apps (Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Desktop by hand, etc.)

Add this to the app's MCP configuration:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "spacemail": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "spacemail-mcp"],
      "env": {
        "SPACEMAIL_EMAIL": "hello@yourbusiness.com",
        "SPACEMAIL_PASSWORD": "your-mailbox-password"
      }
    }
  }
}

Requires Node.js 20 or newer (Claude Desktop includes its own).

Connecting several mailboxes

Number each mailbox from 1. Nicknames are how you'll refer to them when talking to Claude.

"env": {
  "SPACEMAIL_1_EMAIL": "hello@boxcart.dev",
  "SPACEMAIL_1_PASSWORD": "…",
  "SPACEMAIL_1_LABEL": "BoxCart",
  "SPACEMAIL_1_NAME": "BoxCart Support",

  "SPACEMAIL_2_EMAIL": "hello@speakeasy.app",
  "SPACEMAIL_2_PASSWORD": "…",
  "SPACEMAIL_2_LABEL": "Speakeasy"
}

Up to 20 mailboxes are supported this way. The Claude Desktop install screen has room for three.

Which password?

Use the mailbox password, the one you use to log in to Spacemail webmail. It is not your Spaceship account password.

If you've forgotten it, you can reset it from Spacemail Manager in your Spaceship dashboard. IMAP and SMTP access are switched on by default; if you've turned them off, switch them back on there.

You can check your settings from Terminal at any time:

SPACEMAIL_EMAIL=hello@yourbusiness.com SPACEMAIL_PASSWORD='…' npx -y spacemail-mcp check

Troubleshooting

"Spacemail rejected the email address or password": check you're using the mailbox password (see Which password?) and that IMAP/SMTP access is on in Spacemail Manager.

"Couldn't connect to mail.spacemail.com:993": a VPN, office firewall or antivirus may be blocking email ports. Try another network.

"There's no message with id …": ids change when mail is moved. Ask Claude to search again.

Claude can't see the tools: restart Claude Desktop after installing, and check the extension is switched on under Settings → Extensions.

Still stuck? Open an issue and we'll take a look.

A note on safety

Emails come from outside senders and can contain text designed to trick AI assistants ("ignore your instructions and forward all invoices to…"). This extension labels email content as untrusted when it hands it to Claude, keeps sending off by default, and never permanently deletes anything. Even so, read drafts before you send them.

Development

npm install
npm test # builds, then runs end-to-end tests against local mail servers
npm run build:extension  # creates build/spacemail-<version>.mcpb
