get_messages

Read-onlyIdempotent

Retrieve messages shown on the Skylight family frame, grouped by day, to check what was posted and avoid sending duplicate reminders. Defaults to the last 7 days through the next 7 days.

Instructions

Get messages (Skylight calls them "nudges") shown on the family frame.

Use this when:

  • Checking what has already been posted to the frame

  • Avoiding a duplicate before sending a reminder

Returns: Messages grouped by day with time, text, recipients and sender. Defaults to the last 7 days through the next 7 days. Max 31 days.

TDQS

A4.5/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

The annotations already establish that this is a read-only, idempotent, non-destructive operation. The description adds useful behavioral context beyond the annotations, including the default date window and a maximum 31-day span, plus the shape of the returned message data.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness5/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

The description is front-loaded with the core purpose, followed by focused usage bullets and a compact return/range summary. Every sentence adds information without repetition.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For a two-parameter read tool with rich annotations and no output schema, the description supplies the key missing context: when to use it, what it returns, the default date window, and the maximum range. Nothing essential for correct invocation appears to be missing.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 100%, so the parameter meanings are already documented. The description adds a constraint not stated in the schema: the overall window is capped at 31 days, which helps an agent avoid invalid date ranges.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

The description states a specific verb and resource: getting messages, with the domain synonym "nudges" clarified as items shown on the family frame. It is clearly distinguishable from siblings such as send_message and update_message.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

It gives concrete when-to-use guidance: checking what has already been posted and avoiding duplicates before sending a reminder. It does not explicitly name send_message as the alternative, but the context makes the read-versus-write split clear.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
