Zorko

A browser for AI agents that sees the page clearly and spends few tokens.

Zorko (Russian for "keen-eyed") sits between an AI agent and a real Chromium browser. Instead of raw HTML or a huge accessibility tree, the agent gets a short map of the page: headings, text and numbered controls. After each action it gets only what changed. A safety layer catches prompt injections hidden in pages and stops the agent from paying, sending or deleting anything without your approval.

Why

Zorko

Typical browser MCP

Page map

compact text, menus folded into one line, tracking params stripped

full accessibility tree

After a click

only the lines that changed

the whole page again

Hidden prompt injections

detected and reported, hidden text never passed on

passed to the model

Pay / send / delete

blocked until the user approves (confirm=true)

one click away

Passwords and card numbers

never typed; you sign in yourself once

agent types them

Measured on the test pages in this repo (approximate tokens, compared with the AI-mode accessibility snapshot that Playwright MCP sends):

On tiny pages (a login form) the gain is small, the map has a few fixed header lines. Measure your own sites with zorko bench <url>.

Install

pipx install git+https://github.com/dmminga1983/zorko
zorko setup # downloads Chromium, asks about the journal, prints next steps
claude mcp add zorko -- zorko mcp

Without pipx: pip install git+https://github.com/dmminga1983/zorko. Python 3.10+.

Use with Claude Code

After claude mcp add, just ask: "open avito.ru and find a well pump under 10 000 ₽". The agent gets these tools:

Tool

What it does

open(url)

open a page, return the map

look(part)

the map again with fresh numbers; long pages come in parts

read(part)

main text only (article, description), no menus

find(text)

only the map lines that match, instead of the whole page

click(id, confirm)

click element [id]

type(id, text, submit)

fill a field, optionally press Enter

select(id, option)

pick from a dropdown

press(key), scroll, back, wait, tabs

the usual

screenshot(full)

an image, when the map is not enough

note(text)

remember something about this site; shown on the next visit

feedback(text)

report a Zorko weak spot (map missed something, a click did nothing)

consent(choice)

save the user's own answer about the journal

Sites that need a login

Zorko never types passwords. Sign in yourself once, in a visible window:

zorko login https://mail.example.com

The session is kept in the profile ~/.zorko/profiles/default and the agent uses it from then on. Separate profiles: zorko --profile work login ..., zorko --profile work mcp.

Command line

zorko look https://example.com # print the page map
zorko read https://example.com/post # print the main text
zorko bench https://a.com https://b.com # token cost: HTML vs snapshot vs Zorko
zorko consent # allow or forbid the self-improvement journal
zorko report # what Zorko noticed about its own weak spots
zorko share # review and send last month's report (optional)
zorko feedback "prices missing on the search page" --url https://shop.example
zorko config # show settings

Safety

  • Untrusted content. Every map is marked as data, not instructions. Text hidden from people (display:none, white on white, 1px font, off-screen) is never passed to the agent; if it contains instructions to an AI, Zorko reports it. Visible text that addresses an AI is marked [!injection?]. Russian and English patterns.

  • Dangerous actions. Buttons and links that pay, order, send, delete, publish or sign out are marked !confirm. Clicking them, or pressing Enter in a form that submits through them, fails until the agent asks you and retries with confirm=true.

  • No secrets. Password fields and card or account numbers are refused.

  • Network policy. Only http/https. Local and private addresses (localhost, 10.x, 192.168.x, cloud metadata 169.254.169.254) are blocked for pages and for every request they make. robots.txt is respected.

  • Page dialogs (alert, confirm) are dismissed and reported.

  • Action log in ~/.zorko/log/ (typed text is not logged, only its length).

Settings live in ~/.zorko/config.json:

zorko config --allow avito.ru --allow ozon.ru # only these sites
zorko config --deny example.com # never this one
zorko config --set allow_private=true # your own local sites
zorko config --set respect_robots=false
zorko config --set user_agent="..."

Self-improvement

Zorko gets better from real use, but only with your permission. The first time you run it, it asks:

Choice

What happens

off

nothing is recorded

local

Zorko keeps a journal of its own problems on your computer

share

the same, and once a month it offers you a short report to send to the developers

Until you answer, nothing is recorded. Change your mind any time with zorko consent.

The journal (~/.zorko/observations/) notes actions that failed, pages that did not open, maps that look poorer than the page or are too large, controls without a readable name, prompt injections found (counts only), safety refusals and feedback notes. It holds the site name and technical facts only: never page text, what you typed, passwords or full addresses.

Sending is always done by you. zorko share shows the whole report, then opens it as a draft GitHub issue; nothing is sent until you press Submit. zorko share --no-sites replaces site names with site1, site2. Zorko has no server and sends nothing on its own.

The developers read these reports, together with the maintainer's own journal and zorko bench on a fixed list of public sites, once a month. Fixes arrive as reviewed pull requests with tests.

How it works

A small script runs in every frame (including shadow DOM and cross-origin iframes through Playwright), walks the visible DOM, tags controls with stable data-zorko-id numbers and collects text blocks. Python turns that into the map: folds runs of short links, merges an image link with the title link to the same page, drops labels already shown on their control, shortens URLs and splits long pages into parts. Elements a person cannot see are excluded.

Not a goal: hiding automation or bypassing bot protection. Zorko presents itself as a normal Chromium.

Development

pip install -e ".[test]"
python -m playwright install chromium
pytest

The tests serve five kinds of pages locally: a news article with an iframe, a shop, a login form, a JavaScript app with shadow DOM, and a page full of hidden prompt injections.
