Server Configuration

Describes the environment variables required to run the server.

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
LITERATURE_DATA_ROOTNoRoot directory for browser profiles (`profiles/`, `profiles-b/`) and pool state (`pool-state/`). Production upgrades should use a new versioned data root.
LITERATURE_PRIVATE_ROOTNoRoot directory for protected shared token files. Should remain `root:<private-group>` with `0750/0640` permissions. Points to a protected shared token directory, independent of profile data root.
LITERATURE_PRIVATE_GROUP_IDNoNumeric GID of the host group for `LITERATURE_PRIVATE_ROOT`. Enables browser-engine and pool containers to read the internal maintenance token via supplementary group without making the token world-readable.
LITERATURE_BROWSER_ROUTES_JSONNoJSON configuration for browser routes. Used by the Research Gateway to select the workstation-owned RSC path via `rsc` affinity or an RSC hostname. Routed requests make one upstream attempt and never fall back to the general pool.
