inventor-mcp-server

manage_documents

List, open, activate, and close Inventor documents; handle unsaved or protected files and optionally discard changes or quit Inventor.

Instructions

Open documents of this Inventor.

"list": name, type, dirty, active; protected (library / Content Center) ones marked. "open": a file by path. "activate": switch by name or path. "close": one, without saving unless it is yours and dirty (discard=True closes it anyway). "close_unsaved": documents never saved (Part12… left by failed attempts). "close_all": everything; refuses while your own files have unsaved changes, listing them (discard=True closes anyway; protected files never count). quit_inventor=True quits after.

Args: action: "list", "open", "activate", "close", "close_unsaved" or "close_all". name_or_path: For open / activate / close. include_active: "close_unsaved" also closes the active document. discard: Close without saving your changes. quit_inventor: "close_all" then quits this Inventor.

TDQS

A4.4/5.0
Behavior5/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

With no annotations provided, the description carries the full burden and does so well: it discloses protected-file handling, unsaved-change refusal behavior, discard=True overrides, and quit_inventor side effects. These are meaningful behavioral traits beyond the schema, especially for destructive close/quit actions.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

The action-by-action structure is efficient and front-loads the core document operations, with an Args section that maps cleanly to parameters. The opening line 'Open documents of this Inventor' undersells the full manage/close scope, but otherwise the text is compact for a six-parameter, six-action tool.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

Given six parameters, no annotations, low schema coverage, and an output schema, the description is largely complete for correct invocation: it covers action semantics and destructive behavior well. The main remaining gap is that it does not explicitly route the agent away from related sibling tools such as create_document or save_document.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters5/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema description coverage is only 17%, so the description must compensate. It documents action values, name_or_path usage, include_active, discard, and quit_inventor, adding essential semantics that the schema does not provide, especially the otherwise unconstrained action string.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose4/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

The description clearly identifies document lifecycle operations for the connected Inventor and enumerates specific actions: list, open, activate, close, close_unsaved, and close_all. It is clear what the tool does, but it does not explicitly distinguish itself from related siblings such as create_document, save_document, or export_document.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

It gives clear per-action context, including when close_unsaved applies to never-saved documents and when close_all refuses due to unsaved changes. It does not explicitly name alternative sibling tools or state when not to use this tool, so it lacks the routing guidance needed for a 5.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
