Cambrian API MCP
OfficialClick on "Deploy Server".
Wait a few minutes for the server to deploy. Once ready, it will show a "Started" state.
In the chat, type
@followed by the MCP server name and your instructions, e.g., "@Cambrian API MCPget a Solana token snapshot for USDC"
That's it! The server will respond to your query, and you can continue using it as needed.
Here is a step-by-step guide with screenshots.
Cambrian API MCP
Model Context Protocol server for the Cambrian API. It exposes the same product surface as the cambrian CLI for agents that need live DeFi, social intelligence, risk, and API documentation tools.
Every call needs a Cambrian API key supplied by the caller. The hosted server and local package both require one; the server never ships or proxies a shared key.
Create a key at https://console.cambrian.org/. For x402 pay-per-call access
without an API key, use cambrian pay --help; MCP transport still requires a
caller-supplied key.
What You Get
a progressive default profile with one concise tool per public Cambrian API endpoint
compact and full profiles for clients with different tool-loading behavior
a composite workflow tool for Solana token snapshots
cambrian_docsfor live endpoint and guide docs fromhttps://docs.cambrian.org/llms.txtstdio transport for local MCP clients
Streamable HTTP transport for hosted and self-hosted deployments

Tool Profiles
Profile | stdio | HTTP | Tool metadata |
Progressive (default) | no flag, or |
| Direct endpoint tools with types, required fields, scalar enums, OpenAPI defaults, numeric bounds, and array item types. |
Compact |
|
| Three tools: |
Full |
|
| Direct endpoint tools with complete request descriptions, defaults, constraints, and response-size controls. |
All profiles use the same progressive documentation flow. cambrian_docs
returns the request schema by default. Set detail to response for response
fields. The response view also includes the request schema. Set detail to
full only for examples and all endpoint prose. The full profile does not
preload response documentation for every endpoint.
Progressive omits repeated endpoint descriptions, long patterns, large array
enums, and parameter prose. Call cambrian_docs for these details.
Progressive also omits offset, order_asc, and order_desc. These three are
the same on every endpoint that has them, and Progressive already strips the
per-endpoint sortable-column enum, so repeating them adds about 10 kB to the
tool list and tells the agent nothing. The server instructions name them once,
and every endpoint still accepts them. limit stays, with its maximum, because
it is how an agent bounds a response.
Toolsets
The whole catalog is 141 tools. An agent that only asks about Solana still pays
for 99 EVM tools it will never call. Use --toolsets to load only what you
need.
Toolset | Tools |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
npx -y cambrian-api-mcp --toolsets solana,risk
CAMBRIAN_TOOLSETS=solana npx -y cambrian-api-mcpOver HTTP, select per request: https://mcp.cambrian.org/mcp?toolsets=solana.
Omit the option, or pass all, to get every tool. cambrian_docs is always
present, so a narrowed client can still discover and read about any endpoint.
Progressive tools/list sizes:
Selection | Tools | Bytes |
default (all) | 141 | 33,869 |
| 99 | 22,471 |
| 37 | 10,904 |
| 6 | 3,663 |
| 2 | 2,093 |
How MCP Clients Load Tools
The MCP client receives the complete tools/list result for the selected
profile. MCP does not control how much of that result enters the model context.
Claude Code normally loads tool names and server instructions first. It loads complete selected tool definitions after Tool Search. Codex can do the same when its Tool Search feature is available. Other clients can load every tool definition at the start.
The client loads the definition from the selected profile. It does not restore
fields that Progressive omitted. Use cambrian_docs to load the complete
request schema, response fields, and examples.
Agent Skill
New users and agent runtimes should start here: skills/cambrian-mcp/SKILL.md. It covers Cambrian API key auth, hosted and local client config, tool naming, cambrian_docs lookup, composite tools, response limits, and error handling in one document.
For the CLI instead of MCP, see the cambrian CLI skill.
Recommended Setup Through The CLI
The cambrian CLI prints and tests ready-to-use MCP client config:
npm install -g cambrian
cambrian mcp config --mode hosted
cambrian mcp config --mode local
cambrian mcp install --client claude --mode hosted
cambrian mcp test --mode hostedLocal stdio
Run the published package directly:
export CAMBRIAN_API_KEY=<your-api-key>
npx -y cambrian-api-mcpSelect another profile only when your MCP client needs it:
npx -y cambrian-api-mcp --profile compact
npx -y cambrian-api-mcp --profile fullNarrow the catalog to the toolsets you need:
npx -y cambrian-api-mcp --toolsets solana, riskOr install it globally:
npm install -g cambrian-api-mcp
export CAMBRIAN_API_KEY=<your-api-key>
cambrian-api-mcpHosted Streamable HTTP
Use the CLI to print the current hosted URL and client-specific config:
cambrian mcp config --mode hostedDirect Claude setup:
claude mcp add --transport http cambrian \
https://mcp.cambrian.org/mcp \
--header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_CAMBRIAN_API_KEY"Codex config uses TOML:
[mcp_servers.cambrian]
url = "https://mcp.cambrian.org/mcp"
bearer_token_env_var = "CAMBRIAN_API_KEY"The default URL uses the progressive profile. Use
https://mcp.cambrian.org/mcp/compact or
https://mcp.cambrian.org/mcp/full for another profile.
HTTP requests must include one of:
Authorization: Bearer <CAMBRIAN_API_KEY>
X-Cambrian-Api-Key: <CAMBRIAN_API_KEY>Self-Hosted HTTP
npm install
npm run build
node dist/index.js --transport http --host 127.0.0.1 --port 8080Health endpoint:
curl http://127.0.0.1:8080/healthFor hosted deployments, bind to 0.0.0.0:
node dist/index.js --transport http --host 0.0.0.0 --port 8080Tool Names
Tool names are canonical and prefixed with cambrian_.
Examples:
cambrian_base_dexescambrian_ethereum_dexescambrian_arbitrum_dexescambrian_solana_price_currentcambrian_deep42_social_data_alpha_tweet_detectioncambrian_risk_perp_risk_enginecambrian_docscambrian_solana_token_snapshot
Call cambrian_docs without a path to discover the live root index, or use
guides/<slug> (for example, guides/x402) for any guide listed there. For an
endpoint path, omit detail to get its request schema. Use detail: "response"
for response fields and detail: "full" for examples and all endpoint prose.
Endpoint tools come from the same validated runtime registry as the CLI. MCP
rechecks that local cache for each tool-list/tool-call request, while OpenAPI
network attempts are coalesced and limited to once per source every 15 minutes.
If runtime discovery is unavailable, the bundled inventory remains available
without changing existing tool names or schemas. That inventory is this
package's own snapshot of the live OpenAPI (src/generated/offline-registry.ts,
regenerated with npm run registry:generate), not the cambrian package's
bundled registry, so the offline catalog does not drift with that package's
release cadence.
The API serves one generic /api/v1/evm/* surface whose chain_id parameter
lists the chains each endpoint supports. The MCP turns that into one fixed-chain
tool per supported chain, so an agent never has to remember a magic number and
cannot aim an endpoint at a chain it rejects:
Chain | Id | Tool prefix |
Base |
|
|
Ethereum |
|
|
Arbitrum |
|
|
A tool appears for a chain if and only if that endpoint's own chain_id schema
allows the chain — from its enum, a fixed minimum/maximum pair, or an
exclusive bound. No allowlist and no per-endpoint special case: an endpoint the
API widens to enum: [1, 8453, 42161] gains Arbitrum tools on the next metadata
load with no MCP change. Base tools fix chain_id to 8453, Ethereum tools to
1, and Arbitrum tools to 42161.
cambrian_docs accepts an optional chain segment in an EVM path, by id or slug:
evm/42161/dexes, evm/arbitrum/dexes, and evm/dexes all resolve the same
endpoint, with the chain-scoped forms returning that chain's pinned schema.
The chain registry lives in EVM_CHAINS in src/server.ts and is the only
place a chain is declared. To add a chain, add one entry there and run
npm run registry:generate; see .claude/skills/adding-a-chain/SKILL.md.
Development
npm ci
npm test
npm run build
npm pack --dry-runThe package depends on the published cambrian package for shared metadata and the API client. Publish cambrian first when changing both packages together, then refresh this package lock and deploy the MCP server through CI/CD.
Deployment
Deployments are handled by GitHub Actions and Cloud Run from the private source repository. Do not deploy manually.
The workflow:
installs dependencies
validates
package.json#mcpNamematchesserver.json#namevalidates
package.json#versionmatchesserver.json#versionbuilds and tests
builds the Docker image
deploys to Cloud Run
smoke-checks staging directly; production is smoke-tested through the public edge URL after DNS and certificate activation
Registry
The official MCP Registry publishes this server under:
io.github.cambriannetwork/cambrian-apiThe manifest uses https://mcp.cambrian.org/mcp, which matches the production edge URL. The public release workflow publishes each new Registry version after npm publication.

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?
Tool has no description.
Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.
Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?
Tool has no description.
Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.
Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?
Tool has no description.
Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.
Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?
Tool has no description.
Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.
Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?
Tool has no description.
Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.
Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?
Tool has no description.
Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.

Get Cambrian API documentation from docs.cambrian.org/llms.txt. Provide an endpoint or guide path (e.g. "solana/price-current", "evm/dexes", "evm/42161/dexes", "deep42/social-data/sentiment-shifts", "guides/x402"). Endpoint detail defaults to the request schema. Use detail="response" for response fields or detail="full" for examples and all endpoint prose. Every endpoint detail includes the OpenAPI request schema, so do not use full only to get request fields. Use "guides/" for any guide listed in the live root index. Use evm endpoint paths for Base, Ethereum, and Arbitrum tools. Use tool_name when you know the exact MCP endpoint tool. If the exact path and tool name are unknown, use query only. Send only one of path, tool_name, or query. Omit all three to get a concise directory of endpoint groups, endpoint paths, and guides.
| Name | Required | Description | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
| path | No | Endpoint path to fetch docs for. E.g. "solana/price-current", "evm/dexes", "deep42/social-data/sentiment-shifts". Prefix an EVM path with a chain to scope it: "evm/8453/dexes", "evm/1/dexes", or "evm/42161/dexes". Omit for the root llms.txt index. | |
| query | No | Search the root index for relevant endpoint paths. Provide query without path. | |
| detail | No | Use schema for request parameters. Response detail also includes the OpenAPI request schema. Use full only for examples and all endpoint prose. | schema |
| tool_name | No | Exact MCP endpoint tool name. Use this instead of path or query. | |
| _maxResponseLength | No | Optional maximum response length in characters. Default: 30000. |
TDQS
Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?
No annotations are provided, so the description carries the behavioral disclosure burden. It discloses meaningful behavior: the detail default is schema, response mode also includes the request schema, full is only for examples/prose, and every endpoint detail includes the OpenAPI request schema. This goes well beyond a bare 'Get documentation' statement, though it does not mention authentication, rate limits, or error behavior.
Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.
Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?
The description is dense and front-loaded with the primary purpose, then provides examples and usage rules. Every sentence adds operational detail, though a small amount of redundancy exists around the OpenAPI request schema being included in all endpoint details. Still, the length is justified by the need to disambiguate four modes of use.
Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.
Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?
For a documentation-retrieval tool with 5 optional parameters and no output schema, the description covers all necessary decision points: path formats, chain scoping, guide slugs, EVM path mapping, detail levels, mutual exclusion, fallback query behavior, and the directory result when omitted. An agent can confidently determine what to send and what to expect.
Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.
Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?
Although schema coverage is 100%, the description adds significant value beyond the schema: it gives concrete path examples, explains the mutual exclusivity of path/tool_name/query, clarifies the detail enum behavior, and explains the directory output when all parameters are omitted. This compensates richly beyond the plain property descriptions.
Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.
Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?
The description states a specific verb and resource: 'Get Cambrian API documentation from docs.cambrian.org/llms.txt.' It clearly positions this as the documentation-discovery tool distinct from the many data endpoint siblings, and it enumerates exact usages such as path, tool_name, query, or the omitted directory listing.
Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.
Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?
The description provides rich when-to-use guidance: use tool_name when the exact MCP endpoint tool is known, use query when both path and tool name are unknown, use guides/<slug> for guides, and omit all three for a directory. It also explicitly says 'Send only one of path, tool_name, or query,' which prevents invalid combinations.
Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.

TDQS
Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?
There are no annotations, so the description must carry the behavioral burden itself. It discloses concurrency ('concurrently fetches'), resilience ('Tolerates partial failures'), and a notable return aspect ('Returns retrievedAt timestamp'). For a read-style aggregator, these are valuable behavioral traits, though it does not explicitly state read-only semantics, authentication needs, or per-section failure behavior.
Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.
Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?
The description is two tight sentences with front-loaded purpose. The first sentence packs the full scope efficiently; the second adds resilience, return info, and a docs pointer. No filler or redundant restatement.
Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.
Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?
For a complex aggregate tool with no output schema and no annotations, the description covers the main data domains, partial failure behavior, the retrievedAt timestamp, and directs the user to cambrian_docs for field-level details. This is strong, but it still leaves exact response shape and explicit alternatives to inference; the docs pointer mitigates the gap but does not fully replace them.
Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.
Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?
The input schema provides 100% description coverage, including token_symbol's conditional Deep42 behavior and token_address's meaning. The tool description itself adds little beyond the fact that social data is part of the snapshot; the schema already carries the parameter semantics, so the baseline 3 applies.
Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.
Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?
The description opens with 'Full Solana token snapshot' and lists precisely what is fetched: token details, current price, 1h/4h/24h price-volume, top holders, pool list, and Deep42 social data. This is a specific verb plus resource and clearly distinguishes the aggregate tool from the many granular sibling tools for price, holders, pools, and social data.
Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.
Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?
The description implies usage via 'Full ... snapshot' and the enumerated data categories, so an agent can infer this is the aggregate/comprehensive option. However, it never explicitly says when to choose this over dedicated tools like cambrian_solana_token_details, cambrian_solana_price_current, or cambrian_solana_tokens_holders, and it gives no exclusions or alternative-routing guidance.
Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.

Scored across 145 tools
Most tools are clearly distinguished by chain and protocol in the name (e.g., cambrian_ethereum_uniswap_v3_pool vs cambrian_base_uniswap_v3_pool). However, a few pairs like cambrian_solana_tokens_holder_distribution_over_time and cambrian_solana_tokens_holders_over_time have overlapping semantics, and the absence of descriptions for nearly all tools increases ambiguity.
All tools follow the same pattern: cambrian_<chain>_<domain>_<specific>. Plural/singular variations and modifiers like _time_bounded are used consistently. The naming is highly predictable and systematic.
With 145 tools, this is an extreme mismatch for an MCP server. Even if the API covers many chains and protocols, the sheer number overwhelms an agent's selection process and makes the surface unwieldy.
The tool surface appears comprehensive, covering price, pools, tokens, lending, social data, and risk across multiple chains. Minor gaps exist (e.g., no cross-chain comparison tools or some metadata endpoints), but core analytics workflows are well supported.
