Scored across 19 tools
Most tools target clearly distinct actions/scopes (live arXiv search vs. local semantic search vs. in-paper text search; download vs. read vs. abstract). However, there is real overlap between the markdown outline/section tools (get_paper_outline, read_paper_section) and the parallel LaTeX set (list_paper_latex_sections, get_paper_latex_section, get_paper_latex), which an agent could easily confuse despite the format distinctions in descriptions.
The set is overwhelmingly consistent snake_case verb_noun (search_papers, download_paper, read_paper, get_abstract, export_citations, watch_topic, check_alerts, list_watches, unwatch_topic). Minor deviations exist: 'reindex' is a bare verb and 'citation_graph' is noun_noun, but the overall pattern is predictable.
19 tools is on the heavy side but largely justified by the feature breadth (search, local library, semantic index, citations, topic watches, LaTeX/section reading). Some consolidation is possible between the markdown-outline and LaTeX-outline families, making it slightly over-scoped rather than excessive.
The surface covers the full research lifecycle: discovery (search_papers, citation_graph), retrieval (download_paper, read_paper, get_abstract), local organization (list_papers, reindex, semantic_search), alerting (watch_topic/check_alerts/list_watches/unwatch_topic), and deep reading (outline/section/text search). Gaps are minor, e.g. no delete/remove for downloaded papers and no RIS/CSL-JSON export.
