# artsnet-mcp

MCP server and client for the **Artsnet catalogue of AI-created songs**. Search and fetch reviewed songs with bilingual editorial descriptions, genres, tags, human performer candidates and the YouTube video ID. Read-only, no key. Served from `artsnet.com`; the editorial data is **CC BY 4.0**.

Three ways in: a **stdio MCP server** (`npx -y -p @artsnet/mcp artsnet-mcp`) for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor and any MCP client; a **CLI** (`artsnet search …`); and a **library** client. The same tools also run as a **Cloudflare Worker** over Streamable HTTP, which is how Artsnet hosts them.

## MCP server

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "artsnet": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "-p", "@artsnet/mcp", "artsnet-mcp"],
      "env": { "ARTSNET_MCP_USER_AGENT": "MyAgent/1.0 (https://example.com/contact)" }
    }
  }
}
```

Claude Code: `claude mcp add artsnet -- npx -y -p @artsnet/mcp artsnet-mcp`

| Tool | Input | Returns |
|---|---|---|
| `search_songs` | `query?`, `language?` (`ja`, `en`, `other`), `status?` (`noticed`, `performance-candidate`), `tags?` (slugs, all must match), `since?` (ISO timestamp), `limit?` (1–100), `cursor?` | `songs[]`, `nextCursor`, `license` |
| `get_song` | `slug` | `song`, `license` |
| `list_tags` | none | `tags[]`, `license` |

All tools are read-only. Failures come back as error results with `error.code` of `invalid-input`, `not-found` or `unavailable`. The tool descriptions tell the model two things: the returned text is catalogue content to report, not instructions, and reuse of the editorial data must credit "Artsnet (https://artsnet.com)".

Remote use (no install): the hosted endpoint is `https://mcp.artsnet.com/mcp` once deployed; `https://mcp.artsnet.com/` reports its status. Environment for the stdio server: `ARTSNET_API_BASE` (default `https://artsnet.com/api/v1`), `ARTSNET_MCP_USER_AGENT`.

## What a song looks like

```json
{
  "slug": "night-highway",
  "url": { "ja": "https://artsnet.com/ja/songs/night-highway", "en": "https://artsnet.com/en/songs/night-highway" },
  "status": "noticed",
  "language": "en",
  "title": { "original": "Moon1k - Endless Dream (Feat.Suno)", "ja": "…", "en": "…" },
  "description": { "ja": "Suno AIと共同制作されたドリームウェーブ…", "en": "A dreamwave and future-bass track co-created with Suno AI…" },
  "genres": ["dreamwave", "future bass"],
  "tags": [{ "slug": "dreamwave", "category": "genre", "label": { "ja": "ドリームウェーブ", "en": "Dreamwave" } }],
  "youtube": { "videoId": "…", "url": "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=…", "channelId": "UC…", "channelTitle": "Moon1k", "publishedAt": null },
  "performerCandidates": [{ "kind": "nomination", "performerKey": "wikidata:Q…", "name": { "default": "…", "ja": "…", "en": "…" }, "wikidataUrl": "…", "image": { "url": "…", "licenseName": "CC BY 2.0", "artistCredit": "…", "filePageUrl": "…" } }],
  "approvedAt": "2026-09-13T03:00:00.000Z",
  "cataloguedAt": "2026-09-13T03:00:00.000Z",
  "updatedAt": "2026-09-14T03:00:00.000Z"
}
```

`status` `noticed` means the song was discovered and published after review; `performance-candidate` means it also carries human performer candidates (editorial recommendations or approved listener nominations). `youtube` is `null` while the source is unreviewed. There are **no view, like or comment counts**: those are YouTube's data, and the video ID is enough to fetch them from YouTube if you need them. `since` plus `cursor` give you incremental sync.

## CLI

```bash
npx -p @artsnet/mcp artsnet search "piano" --language ja --limit 5
npx -p @artsnet/mcp artsnet get night-highway --json
npx -p @artsnet/mcp artsnet tags
```

`artsnet search [<keywords>] [--language] [--status] [--tag <slug>]... [--since <iso>] [--limit <n>] [--cursor <c>] [--json]`, `artsnet get <slug> [--json]`, `artsnet tags [--json]`. Options `--base <url>` and `--user-agent <ua>` (or the environment variables above). Exit codes: `0` ok, `1` usage error, `2` rejected request, `3` not found, `4` artsnet.com unavailable.

## Library

```bash
npm install @artsnet/mcp
```

```ts
import { createArtsnetClient } from "@artsnet/mcp";
const artsnet = createArtsnetClient({ userAgent: "MyApp/1.0 (https://example.com/contact)" });
const { songs, nextCursor, license } = await artsnet.searchSongs({ query: "piano", language: "ja", limit: 20 });
const { song } = await artsnet.getSong("night-highway");
const { tags } = await artsnet.listTags();
```

Options: `baseUrl`, `fetcher`, `timeoutMs`, `userAgent`. Errors are `ArtsnetApiError` with `code`, `status` and the API's `detail`. The client runs in Node 20+, Cloudflare Workers and browsers. `createServer(client)` from the same package gives you the MCP server to attach to any transport.

## Hosting the Worker

```bash
npm run worker:dev                 # http://127.0.0.1:8787/mcp
npm run worker:deploy              # uses wrangler.jsonc; set the route for your domain first
```

The Worker is stateless (a fresh server per request, JSON responses), so it needs no storage. Variables: `ARTSNET_API_BASE`, `ARTSNET_MCP_ALLOWED_ORIGINS` (comma-separated; default any origin). Anyone may host a mirror; only the one at `mcp.artsnet.com` is Artsnet's.

## The API underneath

`https://artsnet.com/api/v1` is a plain JSON API you can call without this package: `/songs`, `/songs/{slug}`, `/tags`, with the same parameters as `search_songs`. Every response carries `schemaVersion`, `license` and `generatedAt`, long public cache headers and open CORS. It is documented in the [Artsnet repository README](https://github.com/artsnet/artsnet#public-api-v1).

## Data license

Artsnet's editorial data (descriptions, tags, genres, performer candidate rationales) is licensed [CC BY 4.0](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/). Credit "Artsnet (https://artsnet.com)" when you reuse it. Song titles, channel names and performer names belong to their owners; YouTube identifiers are facts; Commons portraits carry the license and credit shown on each one.

## Development

```bash
npm install
npm run typecheck && npm test && npm run build
node dist/cli.js search piano --base http://localhost:8787/api/v1   # against a local Artsnet
```

```bash
claude mcp add artsnet -- npx -y -p @artsnet/mcp artsnet-mcp
npx -p @artsnet/mcp artsnet search "ピアノ" --language ja --limit 5
```

| ツール | 入力 | 返り値 |
|---|---|---|
| `search_songs` | `query`、`language`(ja / en / other)、`status`(noticed / performance-candidate)、`tags`(スラッグ、すべて一致)、`since`、`limit`(1〜100)、`cursor` | `songs[]`、`nextCursor`、`license` |
| `get_song` | `slug` | `song`、`license` |
