SketchUp MCP for SketchUp Make 2017

by ToungaGH

get_selection

Retrieves the current SketchUp selection's entity types, IDs, tags, and world-space bounds, plus face normals and plane points, in metres.

Instructions

Get the current SketchUp selection: for each entity, its type, id, persistent_id, tag (layer), and world-space bounds; faces also get their normal and a point on their plane. Coordinates are in metres, in world coordinates (the active group/component's transform is applied). All lengths and coordinates are in metres.

TDQS

A4.1/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

With no annotations, the description carries the behavioral burden and does well: it discloses returned fields, world-space coordinate behavior, applied active group/component transforms, and units. It does not state what happens when nothing is selected or how nested selections are handled, but the core read behavior is transparent.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

The description is front-loaded and appropriately short for a simple getter. It repeats the metres convention twice, which is minor redundancy but not harmful.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

Given no output schema and no annotations, the description does well by explaining the returned entity fields and coordinate system. It could be more complete by describing empty-selection behavior or the exact response envelope, but it is sufficient for correct invocation.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

The tool has zero parameters, so there are no parameter semantics to explain. The baseline score of 4 is appropriate.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

The description states a specific verb and resource: get the current SketchUp selection. It also enumerates the returned entity fields, making the tool's scope clear enough to distinguish it from siblings like list_entities or select.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines3/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

The 'current selection' framing implies when the tool is useful, but there is no explicit guidance on when to use it versus list_entities, get_model_info, or select. Usage is inferable rather than stated.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
