npm startFiltering Modules and Tools
The server exposes hundreds of tools by default. When used with LLMs, the full tool list consumes significant context window space. You can reduce the number of exposed tools using environment variables to enable only the modules or tools you need.
Why filter?
Reduce context usage
Faster tool discovery for the LLM
More focused responses
Filter by Module
Use ENABLED_MODULES to enable only specific API categories (comma-separated, case-insensitive):
export ENABLED_MODULES="SERP,BUSINESS_DATA,LABS"Available modules:
SERP- Search engine resultsKEYWORDS_DATA- Keyword researchLABSorDATAFORSEO_LABS- Advanced SEO analyticsBACKLINKS- Backlink analysisONPAGE- Website auditsDOMAIN_ANALYTICS- Domain dataCONTENT_ANALYSIS- Content evaluationCONTENT_GENERATION- AI content generationMERCHANT- E-commerce dataAPP_DATA- Mobile app dataBUSINESS_DATA- Business listingsAI_OPTIMIZATION- LLM responses and AI data
Filter by Individual Tool
Use ENABLED_TOOLS for fine-grained control over specific tools (comma-separated, case-insensitive):
export ENABLED_TOOLS="serp_google_maps_live,business_data_google_my_business_info"If neither variable is set, all modules and tools are enabled by default.
Module-scoped subscriptions and 404s
DataForSEO access is often granted per module, not as a single all-or-nothing subscription. That means some endpoints may work while others return 404.
Important interpretation rule:
404on known live endpoints such asSERP,App Data,DataForSEO Labs App Store, orContent Generationcan mean the module is not enabled for the current accountthis is not necessarily a bug in the MCP server or a wrong endpoint path
free discovery endpoints such as locations or languages may still work even when paid live endpoints in the same broad area are unavailable
The server now normalizes known module-scope 404 responses into a clearer message:
DataForSEO module not enabled: <module> ...
When this happens, enable the module in the DataForSEO dashboard or switch to tools from modules that are already enabled for the current account.
Using with Claude or other LLMs
This server implements the Model Context Protocol, which allows LLMs to interact with external systems in a standardized way. To use it with Claude, you'll need to integrate it with your LLM platform according to their specific MCP implementation.

TDQS
Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?
Tool has no description.
Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.
Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?
Tool has no description.
Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.
Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?
Tool has no description.
Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.
Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?
Tool has no description.
Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.
Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?
Tool has no description.
Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.
Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?
Tool has no description.
Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.

The tools are organized into clear categories (e.g., backlinks, keywords, serp) with distinct purposes within each category, reducing overlap. However, some categories like 'labs' have many similar-sounding tools (e.g., google_keywords_for_site, google_ranked_keywords) that could cause minor confusion without descriptions.
Tool names follow a highly consistent pattern of category_subcategory_action (e.g., backlinks_summary, keywords_google_ads_search_volume) throughout the entire set. This structured naming makes it easy to predict tool functions and navigate the large collection.
With 146 tools, the count is excessively high for an MCP server, likely overwhelming for agents and users. While SEO is a broad domain, this many tools suggests poor scoping or aggregation of multiple services into one server, making it cumbersome and inefficient.
The tool set comprehensively covers SEO domains including backlinks, keywords, SERP, content analysis, and more, with no obvious gaps. Each category includes multiple related tools, providing extensive coverage for typical SEO workflows and data needs.
