Amazon break-even and target-margin price

amazon_target_price
Read-onlyIdempotent

Calculate the lowest Amazon US price that breaks even or reaches a target profit margin for FBA/FBM, including itemized fees, profit, and max reachable margin.

Instructions

Find the lowest Amazon.com (US) item price that breaks even and the lowest that reaches target_margin_pct, FBA or FBM, handling FBA price bands and whole-price referral bands. Also shows fees and profit at the target price, or the highest reachable margin if the target is impossible. Uses the same fee engine as the free calculators on shoptrueprofit.com. Returns an itemized fee breakdown, the assumptions used, the fee table version and date, official source URLs and a link to the matching free calculator. Inputs are validated strictly: invalid or unknown arguments are rejected with a message naming the field, never silently adjusted.

Input Schema

TableJSON Schema
NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
ad_spendNoAd spend you attribute to this unit (e.g. Sponsored Products cost per sale), USD. Counted as a cost. Default 0.
categoryYesAmazon referral fee category id (required). See list_amazon_categories.
width_inNoFBA (required): packaged width in inches.
gift_wrapNoGift wrap charge paid by the buyer, USD. Default 0.
height_inNoFBA (required): packaged height in inches.
item_costNoYour cost per unit (product + packaging), USD. Default 0.
length_inNoFBA (required): packaged length in inches. Sides may be given in any order.
ship_dateNoDate the unit ships (YYYY-MM-DD). Sets peak (Oct 15 - Jan 14) vs non-peak FBA rates, the fuel surcharge (from 2026-04-17) and storage season. Default: today in US Eastern time.
weight_lbNoFBA (required): packaged unit weight in pounds (16 oz = 1 lb).
fulfillmentYes"fba" (Fulfilled by Amazon: FBA fulfillment + storage fees, needs package dimensions and weight) or "fbm" (merchant fulfilled: you ship; referral applies to item + shipping).
inbound_costNoFBA only: your cost per unit to ship inventory into Amazon warehouses, USD. Default 0.
product_typeNoFBA fee card: "standard", "apparel", or "dangerous" (hazmat). Default "standard".standard
selling_planNo"pro" (Professional, $39.99/month) or "individual" ($0.99 per unit sold). Default "pro".pro
storage_monthsNoFBA: months the unit sits in Amazon storage before it sells (monthly storage fee x months, at the ship-date month's rate). Default 1.
units_per_monthNoProfessional plan only: units you sell per month, to spread the $39.99 subscription per unit. 0 = do not include the subscription. Default 0.
shipping_chargedNoFBM only: shipping the buyer pays, USD. Must be 0 or omitted for FBA (Amazon sets FBA shipping). Default 0.
target_margin_pctYesDesired profit as a percent of seller revenue (0 = break-even, 30 = 30% margin). 0 to 90.
shipping_label_costNoFBM only: what you pay per unit for the shipping label, USD. Default 0.

TDQS

A4/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already declare readOnlyHint, idempotentHint, destructiveHint=false and a closed-world scope, so the safety profile is covered. The description adds genuine behavior beyond that: strict input validation that rejects unknown/invalid fields by name rather than silently adjusting, FBA price-band and whole-price referral-band handling, and the fallback to highest reachable margin when the target is impossible.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Front-loaded with the core purpose, then behavior, then inputs. Four dense sentences with little waste, though the trailing validation sentence and the source-URL/calculator mentions run slightly long for what they convey.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

An output schema exists, so return values need no prose explanation, and the description still notes key output elements (itemized fees, assumptions, fee-table version/date). For an 18-parameter tool with conditional FBA/FBM requirements, the description covers the complexity and edge cases adequately.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 100%, so all 18 parameters are documented in the schema itself, giving a baseline of 3. The description adds only generic semantics (FBA vs FBM, price bands) rather than clarifying individual fields, so it neither compensates for a gap nor adds much beyond the schema.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb+resource ('Find the lowest Amazon.com (US) item price that breaks even and the lowest that reaches target_margin_pct'), scopes it (US, FBA or FBM), and implicitly distinguishes itself from the sibling fee/profit tools by being the inverse price solver. An agent can tell it apart from amazon_profit and amazon_fees without opening a schema.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines3/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

The description explains what it computes and that it shares the fee engine with the free calculators, but never states when to pick this over amazon_profit (known-price) or amazon_fees (fee lookup). Usage context is implied by the tool's nature rather than stated, and no alternatives are named explicitly.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
