Server Configuration

Describes the environment variables required to run the server.

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
HOUTINI_LM_MODELNoPin the model to use. Useful when the endpoint lists many models (e.g. OpenAI or a large catalogue) since the first listed otherwise wins.
HOUTINI_LM_API_KEYNoAPI key for the endpoint, if it requires one.
HOUTINI_LM_THINKINGNoControls thinking/reasoning: 'auto' switches thinking off for models detected as supporting the toggle, 'off' forces it off on every call, 'on' forces thinking on (useful for bug-hunting or checking an argument, at the cost of time and tokens).auto
HOUTINI_LM_SERIALISENoCalls are queued one at a time by default because a single GPU can only serve one request. Set to 0 to turn the queue off (e.g. for OpenAI, a router or a batching backend like vLLM).1
HOUTINI_LM_MIN_TOKENSNoMinimum output token budget. Output caps under 4,096 (commonly passed by MCP clients) are ignored unless you set HOUTINI_LM_MIN_TOKENS=0.4096
HOUTINI_LM_STRUCTUREDNoSet to 1 so each inference result also carries a structuredContent block (the answer, model, tokens, timing, quality flags) to read as JSON. Leave off for Claude Code.
HOUTINI_LM_ENDPOINT_URLNoThe URL of the OpenAI-compatible endpoint (LM Studio, Ollama, vLLM, SGLang, LiteLLM router, or a cloud API such as OpenAI, DeepSeek, Groq). Defaults to LM Studio on localhost:1234.http://localhost:1234
