Server Configuration
Describes the environment variables required to run the server.
| Name | Required | Description | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
| BASE_URL | No | Public base URL of the deployment, required when `AUTH_MODE=oauth`. Used to build the OAuth callback (`BASE_URL/oauth/callback`), the MCP endpoint (`BASE_URL/mcp`) and the accepted `resource` value. Example: `BASE_URL=https://mcp.example.com`. | |
| AUTH_MODE | No | Authentication mode. `oauth` enables Google sign-in for remote clients (claude.ai, ChatGPT) and requires `BASE_URL`. Other modes include bearer authentication for local HTTP and stdio for local MCP clients. Example: `AUTH_MODE=oauth`. | |
| ACCESS_MODE | No | Access level for the tools. `read-only` (default) exposes six read-only tools; `read-write` exposes all 21 tools and is only supported on the IMAP/SMTP backend. With `ACCESS_MODE=read-write` the IMAP/SMTP backend is always used, even if `MAIL_BACKEND=ews` is set. | read-only |
| MAIL_BACKEND | No | Which mail backend to use. Valid values are `imap` (default, IMAP/SMTP) or `ews` (Microsoft Exchange Web Services, read-only). When `ews` is set, `ACCESS_MODE` must be `read-only`. Example: `MAIL_BACKEND=ews`. | imap |
