Server Configuration
Describes the environment variables required to run the server.

| ENGRAM_TOOLS | No | Set to "all" to opt in to the 40 Advanced MCP tools. By default only the 19 Core tools are loaded. | |
| ENGRAM_SEARCH | No | Set to "hybrid" to opt in to hybrid search (FTS5 full-text plus a semantic vector layer). Requires installing piia-engram[vector]; default keyword search stays unchanged. | |
| ENGRAM_APPROVAL | No | Set to "strict" to gate every write (high-risk items such as credentials, shell commands, MCP config, and permission rules) for your review before it is absorbed. | |
| ENGRAM_NO_UPDATE_CHECK | No | Set to "1" to turn off the once-a-day PyPI version check performed by the engram command and engram doctor. |
