Universal Knowledge MCP
Supports optional semantic search by sourcing free local embeddings from an OpenAI-compatible embeddings endpoint such as Ollama, stored in pgvector and used for similarity ranking of knowledge entries.
Uses a single PostgreSQL database as the knowledge store for all content (Markdown documents, versions, tags, users, grants, stats), with progressive retrieval implemented in SQL using full-text search, pg_trgm similarity, and optional pgvector semantic search.
This server does not currently have a deployable release on Glama. Follow the repository's setup instructions to install and configure it for your MCP client, including any required credentials and local dependencies.
Universal Knowledge MCP
A model-agnostic Model Context Protocol server that gives AI clients a shared, permission-aware knowledge memory. Before an AI repeats research, debugging, or implementation work, it searches what was already solved; after it finishes, it saves a structured Markdown write-up. Everything lives in one PostgreSQL database, and no LLM or paid embedding API is required.

9 MCP tools:
search_knowledge,get_knowledge,save_knowledge,update_knowledge,list_knowledge,export_knowledge,delete_knowledge,knowledge_feedback,knowledge_stats, plus aknowledge_workflowprompt.Progressive retrieval in one SQL round trip: exact title, full-text search,
pg_trgmsimilarity, tags, and optionalpgvectorsemantic search (free local embeddings such as Ollama). Ranking adds verification, feedback, and freshness.Token-efficient: short summaries first, section-level retrieval,
if_none_matchcontent hashes, per-session "already shown" suppression, search caching, duplicate prevention, and estimated vs. client-measured savings.Multi-user and cross-client: stable token-based identities,
private/shared/publicvisibility, explicit grants, organizations and project namespaces, all enforced server-side (inside SQL for reads).Safe by default: redaction of secrets and personal data before persistence, Markdown sanitization, prompt-injection flagging, untrusted-content labeling, audit log, rate limiting, Origin checks, and retention policies.
stdio for local clients and Streamable HTTP for remote clients; Docker, Compose, and GitHub Actions included.
Quick start (local, Docker)
Requirements: Docker with Compose v2, Node.js 22+ (24 LTS recommended) for the CLI.
git clone https://github.com/<you>/universal-knowledge-mcp.git
cd universal-knowledge-mcp
cp .env.example .env
# Set a real token in .env (min. 32 characters):
node -e "console.log(require('node:crypto').randomBytes(32).toString('base64url'))"
docker compose up --build -d # PostgreSQL + migrations + server on http://127.0.0.1:3000/mcp
curl http://127.0.0.1:3000/readyz # {"status":"ready",...}Related MCP server: ContextForge
Quick start (manual)
npm install # first time only: commit the generated package-lock.json
cp .env.example .env # set DATABASE_URL and MCP_AUTH_TOKEN
npm run build
npm run migrate # creates the schema and the bootstrap admin user
npm start # Streamable HTTP on MCP_SERVER_PORT (default 3000)
# or: npm run start:stdio # stdio transport for local clients
npm run demo # end-to-end demonstration against your databaseVerify connectivity with the MCP Inspector (npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector): choose Streamable HTTP,
URL http://127.0.0.1:3000/mcp, header Authorization: Bearer <MCP_AUTH_TOKEN>, then call save_knowledge
and search_knowledge.
Install from npm (run your own copy)
After you publish the package (docs/PUBLISHING.md), anyone can run their own instance with their own PostgreSQL database, the same way as other MCP servers:
claude mcp add knowledge -e DATABASE_URL=postgres://... -e MCP_AUTH_TOKEN=<32+ random chars> -e AUTO_MIGRATE=true \
-- npx -y universal-knowledge-mcpPeople who use your deployed server do not install anything: they add its URL and their personal token (see Connect a client).
Users and tokens
MCP_AUTH_TOKEN is the bootstrap admin credential (identity MCP_AUTH_USER_ID, default owner). For teams,
create users and give each person their own token. The server never trusts user ids sent by an AI client.
npm run admin -- user:create alice --org acme --role member
npm run admin -- token:create alice --label laptop --expires-days 90 # shown once, stored only as a hash
npm run admin -- grant:add kn_01j... bob # share one private documentConnect a client
Client | Transport | Guide |
Claude Code | stdio or HTTP + bearer header
Claude Desktop | stdio (local), or
OpenAI (Responses API, Agents SDK, Codex) | HTTP + header, or stdio
Cursor, VS Code, other MCP clients | stdio or HTTP |
Quick example (Claude Code, remote server):
claude mcp add --transport http knowledge https://knowledge.example.com/mcp \
--header "Authorization: Bearer $UKM_TOKEN"Clients that only support OAuth-based remote connectors (for example claude.ai web/mobile custom connectors and
ChatGPT connectors, as far as we know) cannot use this server's bearer tokens yet; see Limitations.
Paste docs/AGENT_INSTRUCTIONS.md into CLAUDE.md / AGENTS.md so agents search first
and save afterwards.

All settings are environment variables (see .env.example); invalid values stop the server with an actionable message and never echo secrets.
Variable | Default | Notes |

| Run migrations at startup (useful on PaaS). |
| – | Optional OpenAI-compatible embeddings (e.g. Ollama) + pgvector. |
The full list (rate limits, timeouts, cache, retention, TLS/proxy) is in .env.example and
docs/OPERATIONS.md.
Token savings: what is measured and what is estimated
The server never sees model usage. knowledge_stats therefore reports estimated savings (stored solution size
× 4, minus tokens the server returned, 1 token ≈ 4 characters) separately from measured savings, which only
come from clients that report real usage through measured_tokens_used / measured_tokens_saved.
Security model (summary)
Identity comes only from bearer tokens; reads are filtered in SQL so unauthorized rows never leave the database; writes, deletes and visibility changes are checked server-side. Retrieved content is wrapped in tags and labelled as untrusted. The server never executes anything found in stored knowledge. See SECURITY.md and docs/ARCHITECTURE.md.
Testing
npm run lint && npm run typecheck && npm test
# Integration tests need a disposable database:
TEST_DATABASE_URL=postgres://ukm:ukm@localhost:5432/ukm_test npm testIntegration tests cover the acceptance criteria: saving and reusing across sessions and clients, cross-user sharing without private leaks, duplicates, versioned updates with conflict detection, redaction, roles, HTTP auth and session binding, and database outages (which return tool errors instead of crashing).
Deployment
GitHub hosts the code and CI, but it does not run the server or the database. Free and low-cost options
(Oracle Cloud Always Free VM with Docker Compose and Caddy, Render + Neon, Google Cloud Run) and their limits are
described in docs/DEPLOYMENT.md, including automatic deploys: every push to main that passes
CI builds an amd64/arm64 image, publishes it to GitHub Container Registry, and updates your VM over SSH
(.github/workflows/deploy.yml).
Limitations
Clients must call the tools: the server cannot see conversations or detect finished tasks on its own.
Remote auth uses bearer tokens. OAuth 2.1 (needed by some hosted connector UIs) is not implemented yet.
Stateful HTTP sessions live in memory: use one instance, sticky sessions, or
MCP_HTTP_SESSIONS=stateless.The search cache is per process; in multi-instance deployments results can be up to
SEARCH_CACHE_TTL_SECONDSold.Redaction is heuristic: it reduces risk, but users must still avoid pasting secrets or personal data.
Full-text search uses the PostgreSQL
englishconfiguration; other languages still match through trigram and tags.
