Server Configuration

Describes the environment variables required to run the server.

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
PYTHON_DOCS_MCP_E2E_CMDNoOverrides the server command used by scripts/e2e_mcp_test.py. Resolution order is PYTHON_DOCS_MCP_E2E_CMD (env override) → this checkout's .venv/bin/python-docs → python -m python_docs_mcp.server.
PYTHON_DOCS_MCP_CACHE_DIRNoOverrides the cache directory. Everything (cache.db, robots.db) lives in one directory; this defaults to ~/.cache/python-docs-mcp. If the directory is unwritable the server simply runs without a cache.~/.cache/python-docs-mcp
PYTHON_DOCS_MCP_PYPI_JSON_OPT_INNoWhen set to 1, pypi_package uses the robots-disallowed JSON API (https://pypi.org/pypi/<name>/json) instead of the robots-allowed project page. Using it is the user's responsibility and every result carries a notice field saying so. Off by default; the JSON endpoint is never requested unless this is set.unset
PYTHON_DOCS_MCP_POLITENESS_DISABLEDNoA single switch that turns off robots.txt, the throttle, retries, conditional GET and the host allowlist at once. Use at your own risk: you take over responsibility for respecting each site's crawling rules and are far more likely to be rate-limited or blocked. There is no partial opt-out.unset
