Server Configuration

Describes the environment variables required to run the server.

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
OPENAI_API_KEYNoOnly needed when the optional OpenAI provider is explicitly enabled (the default provider is the offline, deterministic mock provider, which requires no API key). Make the key available to the Codex process before configuring with `npm run configure -- --provider openai`; the configuration file itself never stores the API key. On PowerShell: `$env:OPENAI_API_KEY = "set-this-outside-the-repository"`; on Bash: `export OPENAI_API_KEY="set-this-outside-the-repository"`. Then launch Codex CLI from that shell (or use your OS environment/credential workflow before starting the desktop app) and restart Codex after credential changes.
