Describes the environment variables required to run the server.

| ENGRAM_SEARCH | No | Set ENGRAM_SEARCH=hybrid to opt into hybrid retrieval using FTS5 full-text plus a semantic vector layer. Default keyword search remains unchanged unless this is set. | |
| ENGRAM_APPROVAL | No | Set ENGRAM_APPROVAL=strict to gate every write behind review. By default, high-risk items wait for review while low/medium writes may be auto-absorbed. | |
| ENGRAM_NO_UPDATE_CHECK | No | Set ENGRAM_NO_UPDATE_CHECK=1 to turn off the PyPI update check performed by the engram command. |
