Tools
Functions exposed to the LLM to take actions
| Name | Description |
|---|---|
| list_word_listsA | Lists the available word lists with id, title, language, section, grade range, the source of the grade placement and word count. Filter by language, grade (English lists whose grade range includes it) or section. A grade is a typical guide, not a rule: programs and standards differ, and it is not an assessment of any child. English lists are placed by grade; lists in other languages follow each language's own curriculum and have no grade. |
| get_word_listA | The full list: every word, its groups (for example -at, -an, -ap families), the grade range, the placement basis, the page URL and the license. Use an id from list_word_lists, e.g. short-a, kindergarten, sh. |
| get_words_for_gradeA | Every different English word from the lists that cover a grade, deduplicated, with the lists each word comes from. Optional section filter (for example only sight words or only cvc). A grade is a typical guide, not a rule: programs and standards differ, and it is not an assessment of any child. English lists are placed by grade; lists in other languages follow each language's own curriculum and have no grade. |
| find_wordsA | Finds words in the lists that start with, end with or contain a letter pattern, for example 'sh', 'ck', '-ight' or 'ai'. Returns each match with its list, grade range and page. Case-insensitive. |
| get_placement_basisA | Explains the source of each grade placement: Dolch's own grade levels (1936, public domain), the Common Core Foundational Skills item that names the skill, or a typical sequence when no standard names it. Includes the limits. |
| get_citationA | License (CC BY 4.0 for the compilation; the Dolch words are public domain), the citation text and the CSV and JSON download addresses. |

TDQS
Scored across 6 tools
Each tool has a reasonably distinct role: listing lists versus fetching one full list is clearly separated, and get_words_for_grade versus find_words differ by retrieval axis (grade aggregation vs. letter-pattern search). The only mild overlap is between get_words_for_grade and find_words, since both return word sets and could both be filtered by section, but the descriptions make the boundary readable.
All six tools follow a clean snake_case verb_noun pattern (get_/list_/find_ + resource), with resource names matching the domain vocabulary used in descriptions. There is no mixing of camelCase or vague verbs.
Six tools is well-scoped for a read-only word-list dataset: list, detail, grade aggregation, pattern search, citation/license, and methodology. Nothing feels padded or missing at the count level.
The surface covers discovery, full data retrieval, grade-based and pattern-based search, plus license and placement-provenance metadata, leaving no major dead ends for a read-only corpus. Minor gaps remain, such as a direct single-word lookup across lists and richer filters (length, group/family), which agents could approximate only awkwardly via find_words.
