## Key Indicators
### Oil Market Health
1. **Inventory Levels** — Compare to 5-year average
2. **SPR Depletion** — Strategic reserve drawdown signals
3. **Refinery Utilization** — Production capacity constraints
4. **Gasoline Demand** — Consumer activity proxy
### Natural Gas Signals
1. **Storage vs. 5-Year Average** — Supply cushion
2. **Weekly Injection/Withdrawal** — Seasonal patterns
3. **Fill Percentage** — Winter heating season preparedness
### Trading Applications
- **Crude Oil Futures:** WTI/Brent spread analysis
- **Energy Stocks:** Refiners, E&P companies, pipelines
- **Macro Correlation:** Energy CPI component forecasting
- **Geopolitical Risk:** SPR releases during supply shocks
## Data Quality Notes
**Current Implementation:** Demo/mock data structure
**Production Mode:** Register for free EIA API key at eia.gov/opendata
The module is designed to work seamlessly with live API data once a key is configured. Mock data provides realistic structure for development and testing.
## Bloomberg Equivalent
This module replicates Bloomberg Terminal functions:
- **{CRUDEOIL} Cmdty** — Crude oil market data
- **{NATGAS} Cmdty** — Natural gas market data
- **WPSR Index** — Weekly Petroleum Status Report
- **Energy → Commodities → Oil/Gas** — Inventory reports
## Integration Examples
### Energy Dashboard
```python
from eia_energy import get_energy_dashboard
dashboard = get_energy_dashboard()
print(f"Crude: {dashboard['petroleum']['crude_oil']['current_level']:,} thousand bbls")
print(f"SPR: {dashboard['petroleum']['spr']['current_level']:.1f} million bbls")
print(f"Nat Gas: {dashboard['natural_gas']['current_level']:,} Bcf")
```
### Alert on Low Inventories
```python
from eia_energy import get_crude_oil_inventories
data = get_crude_oil_inventories()
if data['vs_5yr_avg_pct'] < -10:
print(f"⚠️ Crude inventories {data['vs_5yr_avg_pct']:.1f}% below 5-year avg")
```
### Weekly Petroleum Report
```python
from eia_energy import get_weekly_petroleum_status
report = get_weekly_petroleum_status()
print(f"Report Date: {report['report_date']}")
print(f"Refinery Util: {report['refinery']['utilization_rate']:.1f}%")
print(f"Gasoline Price: ${report['gasoline']['price']['retail_regular']:.2f}/gal")
```
## Future Enhancements
1. **Historical Time Series** — Full weekly data back to 1990
2. **Regional Breakdowns** — PADD (Petroleum Administration for Defense Districts) data
3. **Product Imports/Exports** — Trade flow analysis
4. **Crude Oil Quality** — Light/heavy, sweet/sour grades
