# PRD: Kubernetes Gateway API Support

## Problem Statement
The platform currently supports HTTP access to the MCP server only through traditional Kubernetes Ingress resources. While Ingress works well, Kubernetes Gateway API is now the recommended next-generation alternative, providing:
- Greater flexibility in traffic management
- Enhanced routing capabilities with role-oriented design
- Modern CRD-driven extensibility
- Better integration with cloud-native infrastructure
- Standardized approach across different ingress controllers
Lack of Gateway API support limits deployment options in modern Kubernetes environments where Gateway API is preferred or required (e.g., GKE Autopilot, EKS with AWS Load Balancer Controller).
## Solution Overview
Implement Kubernetes Gateway API v1 (stable) support as a mutually exclusive alternative to Ingress for exposing the MCP server HTTP endpoint. The solution will:
1. Create Helm-managed Gateway resource with configurable GatewayClass
2. Support both HTTP (port 80) and HTTPS (port 443) listeners
3. Create HTTPRoute resource for routing traffic to the MCP server Service
4. Maintain deployment method awareness (standard vs toolhive)
5. Support SSE streaming with appropriate timeout configuration (3600s)
6. Enable integration with external-dns (via annotations)
7. Enable integration with cert-manager (via certificateRefs)
8. Enforce mutual exclusivity with existing Ingress approach
**Technical Approach**: Use Gateway API v1 stable APIs (`gateway.networking.k8s.io/v1`), create Gateway and HTTPRoute templates in Helm chart, configure timeouts for SSE streaming support, and provide comprehensive documentation with examples.

## Dependencies
| ID | Dependency | Type |
|---------|---------------------------------------------------------|----------|
| DEP-001 | Gateway API CRDs v1.2+ installed in cluster | Required |
| DEP-002 | GatewayClass resource created by infrastructure team | Required |
| DEP-003 | Gateway controller (e.g., Istio, Envoy Gateway) running | Required |
| DEP-004 | cert-manager installed (for HTTPS examples) | Optional |

## Risk Assessment
| ID | Risk | Impact | Mitigation |
|----------|----------------------------------------------------------------|--------|-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
| RISK-001 | Gateway API CRDs not installed in user's cluster | High | Document prerequisites clearly, add troubleshooting section |
| RISK-002 | GatewayClass not available or misconfigured | High | Provide clear error messages, example GatewayClass in docs |
| RISK-003 | Different Gateway controllers have varying feature support | Medium | Document tested controllers, use only standard v1 features |
| RISK-004 | SSE streaming timeout behavior varies by Gateway controller | Medium | Document expected behavior, provide controller-specific notes if needed |
| RISK-005 | Users enable both Ingress and Gateway causing conflicts | Medium | Enforce mutual exclusivity with Helm validation (fail fast) |
| RISK-006 | TLS certificate provisioning complexity with cert-manager | Low | Provide complete working examples with Certificate resource |
| RISK-007 | Cross-namespace Secret references require ReferenceGrant | Low | Document pattern but don't implement (advanced scenario) |
## Alternatives Considered
| ID | Alternative | Pros | Cons | Decision |
|---------|----------------------------------------------|-------------------------------------------|------------------------------------------------|---------------------------------------------|
| ALT-001 | Reference existing Gateway (not create) | Simpler, shared Gateway across apps | Less convenient, requires manual setup | Rejected: Create Gateway for ease of use |
| ALT-002 | Support both Ingress and Gateway enabled | Flexibility during migration | Complexity, potential conflicts | Rejected: Enforce mutual exclusivity |
| ALT-003 | Use v1beta1 API for broader compatibility | Works on older Kubernetes versions | Beta API, less stable | Rejected: Use stable v1 API only |
| ALT-004 | Support TLS Passthrough mode | More TLS termination options | Requires TLSRoute, adds complexity | Rejected: Start with Terminate mode only |
| ALT-005 | Create multiple HTTPRoutes (per listener) | More granular routing control | More complex template logic | Rejected: Single HTTPRoute is simpler |
| ALT-006 | Auto-create GatewayClass in Helm | Fewer manual steps | GatewayClass is infrastructure-level resource | Rejected: Document but don't create |
## Affected Files

## Assumptions
| ID | Assumption | Rationale |
|----------------|---------------------------------------------------------------------|------------------------------------------------------------------------|
| ASSUMPTION-001 | Users have Gateway API CRDs pre-installed | Infrastructure prerequisite, similar to requiring Kubernetes itself |
| ASSUMPTION-002 | GatewayClass is managed by infrastructure/platform team | Standard practice, GatewayClass is cluster-scoped infrastructure |
| ASSUMPTION-003 | Most users need only HTTP or HTTPS, not both simultaneously | Typical deployment pattern, can enable both if needed |
| ASSUMPTION-004 | 3600s timeout is sufficient for SSE streaming | Matches current Ingress configuration, proven in production |
| ASSUMPTION-005 | Users prefer Helm-managed Gateway over referencing existing | Simplifies deployment, aligns with Helm chart philosophy |
| ASSUMPTION-006 | TLS Terminate mode covers 99% of use cases | Passthrough mode is rarely needed for HTTP services |
