SUBJECT : Fire Safety
TITLE : Elevator Lobbies in High-Rise Buildings
PURPOSE : The purpose of this Information Sheet is to restrict movement of smoke and
heat between floors through elevator doors and hoist-ways.
REFERENCES : CBC-2013 SECTION 713.14.1 Exceptions 2-8
CBC-2013 SECTION 1008.1.2 Exception 6
Exceptions listed in the above referenced codes shall not be applicable to
high-rise buildings.
REQUIREMENTS
Elevator lobbies in high-rise buildings shall be enclosed with 20-minute rated doors and shall be of the
pivoted or side-hinged swinging type.
Lobbies that serve Fire Service Access Elevators shall be enclosed with 45-minute rated side-hinged
swinging type doors.
Existing side-hinged swinging doors in high-rise elevator lobbies shall not be removed.
In existing non-conforming high-rise buildings where elevator lobbies are unenclosed, the installation of
listed products complying with 2013 CBC 713.14.1Exceptions 5 or 8 shall be acceptable.
