# Knowledge Graph Demo: How djarvis Answers Permitting Questions
## Using Amy Lee's Actual DBI Projects
**Purpose**: Show how a plain-English question gets routed through our semantic layer to pull specific, accurate answers from 18 structured source files — without keyword search, without guessing which document to open, without missing anything.
**Why this matters**: A permit expediter's value is knowing *which* rules apply to *this* project. That's a graph problem, not a search problem. Our semantic layer turns it into one.

The magic is in the middle layer. A keyword search for "food and beverage" finds nothing useful. Our system knows that means *restaurant*, and a restaurant means *hood suppression*, *A-2 occupancy*, *SFFD review*, *DPH*, and *Section 311 notification* — even though the user never mentioned any of those things.

Meanwhile, the 2-unit conversion (not the ADU) DOES trigger Section 311. So the answer is nuanced:

A permit expediter knows this from experience. A junior would miss half of them.

## What This Proves
1. **The semantic layer eliminates the "which document?" problem.** You ask a question. It knows which of 18 files to look in and exactly where.
2. **The inference layer catches what you didn't ask.** Mention "restaurant" and it automatically pulls in hood suppression, assembly occupancy, DPH review, and Section 311 — because an experienced expediter would.
3. **It works on Amy's actual projects.** These aren't hypothetical scenarios. 199 Fremont, 600 Battery, 505 Mission Rock, Grand View, 1240 Fillmore, 799 Van Ness — all real permits from her DBI portfolio. She can validate every claim against her lived experience.

- **No natural language generation** — it routes to sources, doesn't compose prose answers (that's the RAG layer, Phase 3)
- **No "Amy's brain" layer** — the gotchas, the shortcuts, the "always do X before Y" — that's what the interview fills in
- **No real-time data** — permit status, inspection results, plan check queues aren't ingested yet
- **No project-specific memory** — can't track "Amy's 199 Fremont project" across the full lifecycle
These are all planned. The semantic layer is the foundation they build on.
