Goal
Deploy the sitebay-mcp MCP server so it is accessible from Cloudflare/Cloudflare AI Playground/Claude Desktop. The user wants the Python MCP server to be reachable, ideally via Cloudflare Workers, but the Python package has native dependencies that complicate running it directly as a Python Worker.
Instructions
- Primary user intent: run sitebay-mcp (a Python FastMCP-based MCP server) and make it reachable over HTTP/SSE for remote MCP clients (Playground, Claude Desktop).
- User permitted me to modify files in the repo and to deploy Workers; they logged into Wrangler and allowed CLI deployments.
- Constraint: Python Workers run on Pyodide (WASM) and only support pure-Python/Pyodide-compatible packages. sitebay-mcp depends on packages with compiled extensions (notably cryptography), making a direct Python Worker implementation infeasible without major porting.
- Working plan (what we followed): try running as a Python Worker via pywrangler; when Pyodide import failures prevented the runtime from starting, pivot to deploying a lightweight JavaScript Cloudflare Worker proxy that forwards requests to a true Python backend (container or local process). Provide instructions for running the Python backend in Docker / locally and point the Worker at that backend via BACKEND_URL.
Discoveries
- The demo remote-mcp-authless (Cloudflare JS Worker) exists at external/cloudflare-ai/demos/remote-mcp-authless. I inspected and modified it slightly to support both /mcp and /sse mounts.
- sitebay-mcp is a Python project (pyproject.toml) built with FastMCP, with server entrypoint at src/sitebay_mcp/server.py. It expects SITEBAY_API_TOKEN and supports HTTP streamable transport (SSE).
- Python Workers (Pyodide) cannot import cryptography and other compiled-extension packages; trying to attach sitebay_mcp into a Pyodide worker caused a fatal Pyodide error: "Entropy call failed" and subsequent unreachable panic. The failure originates from cryptography/authlib dependencies used by fastmcp/fastmcp.server.auth.
- Wrangler reported "uploaded script has no registered event handlers" because the Python module failed to load — the root cause is the Pyodide import crash.
- To work around the runtime limitations, a small JS proxy Worker was implemented that:
- serves a static /.well-known/mcp/server-card.json for Smithery scanning/discovery, and
- proxies all other requests to a backend URL (env var BACKEND_URL, default http://localhost:7823), preserving path and query and streaming.
Accomplished
What was completed:
- Cloned cloudflare/ai and inspected demos under external/cloudflare-ai.
- Inspected and modified demo remote-mcp-authless:
- File modified: external/cloudflare-ai/demos/remote-mcp-authless/src/index.ts
- Change: Worker now serves both /mcp and /sse (added mount detection).
- Attempted npm install / wrangler dev for remote-mcp-authless; had environment issues (npm ci vs npm install), but local wrangler dev was launched in the environment (timed out).
- Attempted to deploy sitebay-mcp as a Python Worker using pywrangler:
- Created and iterated on src/entry.py (multiple revisions) to implement a Python Worker handler, server-card, and/or a DO-based approach. Several imports caused LSP errors in editor (but those are not fatal).
- Encountered fatal Pyodide errors (cryptography import), so Python Worker deployments failed and no handler registered.
- Pivoted and implemented a JS proxy Worker:
- Added workers/sitebay-proxy/index.mjs (JavaScript Worker that serves server-card and proxies requests).
- Added wrangler-proxy.toml to deploy the JS proxy with BACKEND_URL variable.
- Deployed the JS proxy using Wrangler: deployed URL printed (https://sitebay-proxy.sitebay.workers.dev).
- Cleaned up wrangler.toml earlier (removed DO binding because entry.py no longer matched it).
- Documented local / Docker startup for the real Python server and the recommended approach to run it in a container and point the proxy at it.
What remains / next actions:
- Start and host the real Python backend (sitebay-mcp) in a real Python runtime:
- Local venv run (quick test) OR
- Build and run the Docker image (Dockerfile provided) OR
- Build and push container to a cloud container platform (Cloud Run, Fly, etc.) — recommended for production.
- Point the deployed proxy Worker to the backend by setting BACKEND_URL to the public backend URL (or leave it as default for local dev).
- Test end-to-end: ensure backend serves the SSE /sse (or /mcp) path and that the Worker forwards streaming responses correctly. Use npx mcp-remote or Cloudflare Playgound to confirm.
- Optionally secure the Worker/proxy (add token or auth) or change the Worker to route only /sse and protect other paths.

Key technical decisions and why they were made
- Do not attempt to run sitebay-mcp directly as a Cloudflare Python Worker in its current form: failed because sitebay-mcp imports cryptography/authlib/fastmcp modules that use compiled C extensions — Pyodide cannot load those and crashes at import time.
- Implemented a JS Worker proxy instead of porting the application to Pyodide. Rationale:
- Minimal change, fast to deploy.
- Keeps the heavy Python app running in a native environment (Docker/Cloud Run) where dependencies work.
- The Worker gives a public Cloudflare URL and can serve server-card metadata for discovery and preserve SSE streaming to clients.
- Added static server-card at /.well-known/mcp/server-card.json to satisfy Smithery scanning and avoid scanning failures.
- Removed the DO / Python Worker attempt from the production path; the proxy is the pragmatic path forward.

Next recommended steps (priority)
1. Start the Python backend in a real Python environment:
- Locally (venv) for quick dev and testing, or
- Docker (recommended) and test it on host port 7823/8000.
2. Update Worker BACKEND_URL to point at the backend public URL (or redeploy wrangler-proxy.toml with the backend address).
3. Test end-to-end streaming with a remote MCP client:
- Use npx mcp-remote http://localhost:7823/sse (for local) or use the Worker URL: https://sitebay-proxy.sitebay.workers.dev/sse
- Connect via Cloudflare AI Playground and/or Claude Developer settings.
4. Optionally secure the Worker (bearer token check) or implement additional monitoring/logging.
