# Project Reorganization Summary
This document summarizes the major reorganization of the Insight Digger MCP project completed on 2024-01-XX.
## Overview
The project has been completely reorganized from a messy, confusing structure into a professional, maintainable, and scalable architecture. This reorganization addresses naming confusion, improves separation of concerns, and establishes clear development workflows.
## Key Changes
### 1. Directory Structure Transformation
**Before:**
```
insight_digger_mcp/
├── mcp_server.py # Confusing name
├── mcp_client/
│ ├── server.py # Confusing name
│ ├── config.py # Mixed locations
│ └── ...
├── src/
│ └── index.js # Node.js mixed with Python
└── ...
```
**After:**
```
insight_digger_mcp/
├── src/
│ ├── python/
│ │ └── insight_digger_mcp/ # Proper Python package
│ │ ├── config/ # Centralized config
│ │ ├── flask_api/ # Clear naming
│ │ ├── mcp_server/ # Clear naming
│ │ └── utils/ # Shared utilities
│ ├── nodejs/ # Separate Node.js code
│ │ ├── src/index.js
│ │ └── bin/ # CLI executables
│ └── shared/ # Language-agnostic resources
├── config/ # All configuration files
├── tests/ # Comprehensive test suite
├── scripts/ # Deployment & utilities
└── docs/ # Documentation
```
### 2. Component Renaming and Clarification
| Old Location | New Location | Purpose |
|-------------|-------------|---------|
| `mcp_client/server.py` | `src/python/insight_digger_mcp/flask_api/app.py` | Flask HTTP API server |
| `mcp_server.py` | `src/python/insight_digger_mcp/mcp_server/server.py` | Direct MCP protocol server |
| `src/index.js` | `src/nodejs/src/index.js` | Node.js MCP bridge |
| `mcp_client/config.py` | `src/python/insight_digger_mcp/config/settings.py` | Configuration module |
| `mcp_client/manager.py` | `src/python/insight_digger_mcp/flask_api/mcp_manager.py` | MCP server manager |
### 3. Configuration System Overhaul
- **Centralized**: All config files now in `/config/` directory
- **Environment-specific**: `default.yaml`, `development.yaml`, `production.yaml`
- **Template-based**: `.env.example` for environment variables
- **Schema validation**: JSON schemas for configuration validation
### 4. Modern Python Packaging
- **pyproject.toml**: Modern Python packaging standard
- **Entry points**: CLI commands for all components
- **Development dependencies**: Separate dev/test dependencies
- **Type hints**: Prepared for type checking with mypy
### 5. Professional Development Workflow
- **Installation script**: `./scripts/setup/install_dependencies.sh`
- **Development commands**: `npm run dev:flask`, `npm run dev:bridge`
- **Testing**: `npm test` runs both Python and Node.js tests
- **Deployment**: Systemd service files and Docker preparation
## Breaking Changes
⚠️ **This is a major breaking change release.** All import paths and file locations have changed.
### Import Path Changes
| Old Import | New Import |
|-----------|-----------|
| `from mcp_client.config import MCPConfig` | `from insight_digger_mcp.config.settings import MCPConfig` |
| `from mcp_client.manager import MCPServerManager` | `from insight_digger_mcp.flask_api.mcp_manager import MCPServerManager` |
| `from mcp_client.session_manager import MCPSessionManager` | `from insight_digger_mcp.flask_api.session_manager import MCPSessionManager` |
### Command Changes
| Old Command | New Command |
|------------|------------|
| `cd mcp_client && python server.py` | `npm run dev:flask` |
| `python mcp_server.py` | `npm run dev:mcp` |
| `cd src && node index.js` | `npm run dev:bridge` |
### Package Name Changes
- NPM package: `@sandsiv/data-narrator-mcp` → `@sandsiv/insight-digger-mcp`
- Python package: `mcp_client` → `insight_digger_mcp`
## Migration Guide
### For Developers
1. **Update local development environment:**
```bash
# Remove old virtual environment
rm -rf venv
# Run new installation script
./scripts/setup/install_dependencies.sh --dev
# Activate virtual environment
source venv/bin/activate
```
2. **Update import statements** in any custom code using the table above
3. **Update development commands** using the new npm scripts
### For Production Deployments
1. **Update systemd service files** using the new templates in `scripts/deployment/systemd/`
2. **Update configuration files** using the new YAML format in `config/`
3. **Update deployment scripts** to use the new entry points:
- `python src/python/scripts/start_flask_api.py`
- `python src/python/scripts/start_mcp_server.py`
### For Claude Desktop Users
Update your `claude_desktop_config.json`:
```json
{
"mcpServers": {
"insight-digger": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "@sandsiv/insight-digger-mcp@1.0.0"],
"env": {
"MCP_CLIENT_URL": "https://your-mcp-service.com"
}
}
}
}
```

```bash
npm run dev:bridge
# Test with MCP Inspector or Claude Desktop
```
