# Playwright E2E Testing Solution for Django + pytest-asyncio
## Executive Summary
This document explains how to implement Playwright end-to-end tests in a Django project that uses pytest-asyncio, without causing `SynchronousOnlyOperation` errors in synchronous unit and integration tests.
**Problem:** When pytest-playwright is used alongside pytest-asyncio, all tests can be treated as async, breaking Django ORM operations in synchronous tests.
**Solution:** Disable pytest-playwright plugin, use Playwright's sync API directly, and configure pytest-asyncio to auto-detect async tests.

### Root Cause
When you install `pytest-playwright` and `pytest-asyncio` together:
1. **pytest-playwright** auto-discovers tests and provides async fixtures
2. **pytest-asyncio** detects these async fixtures and switches to STRICT mode
3. In STRICT mode, pytest-asyncio treats ALL tests as potentially async
4. Django ORM calls fail with `SynchronousOnlyOperation` because they're now in an async context
5. Even tests that don't use Playwright are affected!

## How It Works
### Test Execution Flow
1. **pytest collects tests**
- Sees `asyncio_mode = auto` in pytest.ini
- Only tests marked with `@pytest.mark.asyncio` are treated as async
- E2E tests are NOT marked as async, so they run in sync mode
2. **E2E tests run**
- `playwright` fixture creates sync Playwright instance
- `browser` fixture launches Chromium
- `page` fixture provides a browser page
- `live_server` starts Django dev server in background thread
- Test code runs synchronously, making Django ORM calls safe
3. **Unit/Integration tests run**
- Run in their normal sync or async context
- Not affected by E2E test setup
- Django ORM works normally in sync tests
- Async-marked tests use `sync_to_async` when needed

## Known Limitations
### Teardown Errors
When running E2E tests with `live_server`, you may see teardown errors:
