Note: When referencing an issue in your commit message, use one of the following formats:

Step 3: Create a Pull Request
Now create a pull request that references the issue:

Include "Closes #16" to ensure the issue is closed when merged

## Issue Status Workflow Test - Run 2
After making fixes to the workflow file and the commit message parser, we're running another test.
### Step 1: Update the commit message parser
Made the script more robust to handle variations in commit message format:
- Updated regex patterns to allow optional colons after action keywords (e.g., `refs: #16`)
- Added better spacing handling in the regex patterns
### Step 2: Make test commit with proper format

## Issue Status Workflow Test - Run 3
After implementing a helper script for issue management, we're testing the automated status workflow again.
### Step 1: Creating issue_helper.py
Created a helper script (scripts/issue_helper.py) to standardize issue management tasks:
- `python scripts/issue_helper.py start <issue>` - Start work on an issue
- `python scripts/issue_helper.py complete <issue>` - Complete an issue by creating a PR
- `python scripts/issue_helper.py update <issue> <status>` - Update issue status
- `python scripts/issue_helper.py test <issue> <status>` - Force update for testing
### Step 2: Test status update

Result: Issue status was successfully updated to "in-progress" and a comment was added explaining the change.
### Step 3: Verify documentation

### Step 4: Update issue with test results
The issue still needs testing of the "completed" status transition, which will be triggered when the PR is merged.

After enhancing the issue helper script, we're testing the automated status workflow again.

The enhanced issue helper script now includes:

- Detailed next steps guidance at each workflow stage
- Interactive prompts for potentially problematic actions
- Improved branch naming and management
- Comprehensive status checking with `check` command
The script now creates a much smoother workflow:

To verify the full status transition workflow:
1. Created issue #22 "Test Full Issue Status Workflow" with status:prioritized
2. Started work with `python scripts/issue_helper.py start 22`
- Confirmed status changed to in-progress
- Branch created with proper naming
3. Made improvements to the helper script and documentation
4. Will complete with `python scripts/issue_helper.py complete 22`
5. After PR is merged, will confirm status changes to completed
### Step 8: Current Status of Testing Workflow
PR #23 has been created for Issue #22:
- The PR contains "Closes #22" in the body, which should trigger status updates when merged
- Current status of Issue #22 is still "in-progress"
- GitHub Actions checks are pending
For Issue #16 (our primary task):
- We've completed all the tasks we set out to do:

✓ Fix dependency installation in the workflow
✓ Enhance commit message parser to handle syntax variations
✓ Test with sample commits and PRs
✓ Verify status transitions work (prioritized → in-progress)

### Separation of Components
It's important to understand the separation between:

2. **Helper tools** (what we've been developing):
- scripts/issue_helper.py (convenience script)
- Additional documentation
The core automation is already functional. Our work has been focused on creating tools that make it easier to work with the existing automation.
